Hi Guys. Let’s discuss running shoes and please feel free to pitch in. There are so many myths about running shoes out there that it can be hard to pick and choose. Are there a difference between men’s and women’s running shoes other than design and color? Yes: Men and women are different, so are the shoes. It doesn’t mean that you can’t run in a shoe from the opposite gender if you like. You need several different pairs of running shoes: YES GIVE ME MORE SHOES AND GADGETS 😉. Just kidding, but there is something about having at least 2 pairs of different running shoes. Using a variety of different shoe types forces our feet and running form to adapt to a wider range of training loads. Two pairs of shoes are plenty for recreational runners, but if you move between road and trail, I’ll recommend at least one more pair of shoes. So when should I replace my old running shoes? Many people say you can run around 800 to 1000 km in a pair of shoes. But I think it’s more important to let you body tell you when it’s time to get new shoes. If you start feeling muscle fatigue or pains around you joints or knees it might be time to get new shoes. If you feel like you can feel the impact of every step in your feet, knees, and hips, it means that the shock absorption in your shoes has deteriorated it might be time. One orvious sign that you need new running shoes is if the treads, especially on the soles, are worn-out. Then you definitely need new shoes as the soles are designed to live longer than the cushioning and shock absorbency. I’ve never claimed to be a runner.... in fact I’ve always said that I WASN’T!!! In 2018 I ran my first 5K to mark it off my “bucket list” (not even sure why it was there!!!) said I’d never run another one, then I found myself running another almost 1 year later, and committed to another.... 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ 🏃‍♀️ It’s a struggle, and sometimes I feel so defeated 😕 🏃‍♀️ I wanted to share some of my tips with you that have seem to help me: 🏃‍♀️ 1) first mile is ALWAYS the hardest!!! Keep reminding yourself you can do this!!! 2) repeat can’t stop, wont stop!! 3) I find music to fit my mood and that will motivate me. I set mini goals to fit the length of the song.... seems silly but it works! 4) track your progress, even if you do .10 better.... it’s an improvement 5) understand you are not always going to beat your day before!!! Sleep, mood, music, hydration, etc plays into this. Celebrate what you do NOT what you didn’t do!! 6) schedule your runs.... I correlate my runs with my workouts and try to do 2 miles with each weight lifting day. What get scheduled gets done!! 7) have fun.... sometimes it’s just a running dance party!!! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️ You don’t have to be fast, you don’t have to run a marathon but you do have to be consistent!!! 🏃‍♀️ Here’s to you and your runs!!! #5ktraining #runningtipsforbeginners #beginnerrunner #2020goals #40somethingfitness #treadmillrunner #virtual5k

FOR ALL YOU RUNNERS OUT THERE: Our glutes are the most important muscle group for runners. They have 2 major roles when running: 1. They extend your leg back to propel your body forward to continue that running cycle - running pace ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. They are major hip stabilizers, reducing the force through the lower back and the knees. It also reduces excessive side-to-side sway which improves running efficiency. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Many studies link glute weakness with achilles tendinopathies, runners’ knee, ITB syndrome, etc. As our glutes are the largest muscle group in the body, they are capable of producing a lot of power and contribute greatly to your pace. So, it’s actually imperative to strengthen those glutes to reduce the risk of injury as well as improve your pace. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For some weird reason, we think we should either be a runner or go to the gym – we can never do both. But it’s quite the opposite – for you to be an efficient runner and to improve your pace, you must regularly do strength training. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A study was done looking at which exercise activated the glutes the most and in turn is better for running – squats or hip thrusts? Are your pre-run warm ups actually reducing injury risk?⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ The latest studies have found static stretches don’t reduce injury risk, and don’t reduce the intensity or duration of delayed onset muscle soreness after exercise. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ Stretching won’t do any harm, but if you want a more effective warm up think active. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ Progressively increase the intensity of your warm-up prior to hard running or racing. This is the method elite athletes use. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ Research shows light jogging for 5-10 minutes, followed by dynamic movement drills which take your joins through a full range of movement are more effective than static stretches. Cold weather running. I love it. IF I’m properly prepped. Running tip: A quarter of the battle of getting up and going on a cold or inclement weather run, is laying out the clothes. If I get out of bed when it’s time to go, and I see the clothing laying out, I’m probably more likely to put it on and convince myself to go. Everyone has a part of their body that has to stay warm in order for them to complete their goal. For me it’s my neck and ears. Heck, I could still wear shorts in some of the coldest weather, but don’t let my neck get cold! I invest in fleece lined and regular gaiters. They can be used around your neck or if you have a long one they can be pulled up around your head. Also sometimes I use them on my wrist if I get particularly sweaty and need to wipe my brow. They do triple duty. Layers, layers! If you layer up it leaves you room to remove something or put something back on at the end of your run. If you don’t wear enough, you are doomed for failure. One of the best things I’ve invested in over the years has been two pairs of fleece lined tights. ( I don’t wear them together by the way.) I rarely get cold with those on. The other thing I can do to layer under them is to put on compression socks. Not only do they drive the blood circulation back to your body, but they give you a little extra warmth from the knees down. The last thing that I like to layer with is a longer anorak type jacket. They tend to cover your butt or sometimes they go a little longer on your thighs. Gloves, and a hat if it’s extra cold to prevent heat loss from your head. Warm up with a 5-10 min. series of exercises and stretches, and you’re off! My run tomorrow will be around 40° and a higher humidity. Hate running? That was me too! Like, if you saw me running, it was likely someone was chasing me kind of thing. 😯 But then I had all these kids and needed a workout I could do without a gym and no equipment. I kid you not, I got started in running by putting our baby monitor on the front porch, volume cranked up during naptime while I would run up one side of the block and then down the other, around and around so I could hear when my kids woke up. When I got started, I couldn’t even jog a mile without stopping and practically dying. But then a mile seemed easier and then 2 and then 3...it didn’t happen overnight. It happened over time of consistently getting out for a run. And I learned A LOT along the way of things to do and not to do. This pic is one of my running buddies after we ran a 10k- 6 miles. And I’m SMILING!! Hi Guys. Let’s discuss running shoes and please feel free to pitch in. There are so many myths about running shoes out there that it can be hard to pick and choose. Are there a difference between men’s and women’s running shoes other than design and color? Yes: Men and women are different, so are the shoes. It doesn’t mean that you can’t run in a shoe from the opposite gender if you like. You need several different pairs of running shoes: YES GIVE ME MORE SHOES AND GADGETS 😉. Just kidding, but there is something about having at least 2 pairs of different running shoes. Using a variety of different shoe types forces our feet and running form to adapt to a wider range of training loads. Two pairs of shoes are plenty for recreational runners, but if you move between road and trail, I’ll recommend at least one more pair of shoes. So when should I replace my old running shoes? Many people say you can run around 800 to 1000 km in a pair of shoes. But I think it’s more important to let you body tell you when it’s time to get new shoes. If you start feeling muscle fatigue or pains around you joints or knees it might be time to get new shoes. If you feel like you can feel the impact of every step in your feet, knees, and hips, it means that the shock absorption in your shoes has deteriorated it might be time. One orvious sign that you need new running shoes is if the treads, especially on the soles, are worn-out. Then you definitely need new shoes as the soles are designed to live longer than the cushioning and shock absorbency. Hate running? That was me too! Like, if you saw me running, it was likely someone was chasing me kind of thing. 😯 But then I had all these kids and needed a workout I could do without a gym and no equipment. I kid you not, I got started in running by putting our baby monitor on the front porch, volume cranked up during naptime while I would run up one side of the block and then down the other, around and around so I could hear when my kids woke up. When I got started, I couldn’t even jog a mile without stopping and practically dying. But then a mile seemed easier and then 2 and then 3...it didn’t happen overnight. It happened over time of consistently getting out for a run. And I learned A LOT along the way of things to do and not to do. This pic is one of my running buddies after we ran a 10k- 6 miles. I’ve never claimed to be a runner.... in fact I’ve always said that I WASN’T!!! In 2018 I ran my first 5K to mark it off my “bucket list” (not even sure why it was there!!!) said I’d never run another one, then I found myself running another almost 1 year later, and committed to another.... 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ 🏃‍♀️ It’s a struggle, and sometimes I feel so defeated 😕 🏃‍♀️ I wanted to share some of my tips with you that have seem to help me: 🏃‍♀️ 1) first mile is ALWAYS the hardest!!! Keep reminding yourself you can do this!!! 2) repeat can’t stop, wont stop!! 3) I find music to fit my mood and that will motivate me. I set mini goals to fit the length of the song.... seems silly but it works! 4) track your progress, even if you do .10 better.... it’s an improvement 5) understand you are not always going to beat your day before!!! Sleep, mood, music, hydration, etc plays into this. Celebrate what you do NOT what you didn’t do!! 6) schedule your runs.... I correlate my runs with my workouts and try to do 2 miles with each weight lifting day. What get scheduled gets done!! 7) have fun.... sometimes it’s just a running dance party!!! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️ You don’t have to be fast, you don’t have to run a marathon but you do have to be consistent!!! 🏃‍♀️ Here’s to you and your runs!!! #5ktraining #runningtipsforbeginners #beginnerrunner #2020goals #40somethingfitness #treadmillrunner #virtual5k
