Don’t like taking pictures of myself, especially selfies, but the point is this: Can you tell how I’m feeling in this pic? No. I could be happy, sad, tired, frustrated, angry, etc. I could be worrying about a future date or I could be stressed over an event in the past. When you look at someone you never know what he/she is feeling. When I went off to college to study psychology, I wanted to master the art of reading people. Know what they are feeling/thinking just by looking at them. I watched documentaries and read articles and books looking for answers. It didn’t take long to realize that it is impossible. You can look for verbal and non-verbal cues to make an educated guess, but that’s all you can do. Take a guess. Instead of trying to read people, I switched my thinking to focus on listening and accepting. Listening to what people say, and accepting them for who they are. For as cliche as this phrase may have become in recent years, you can never tell how someone is feeling just by looking at them. Just like you cannot judge a book by its cover. This weekend treat those around you with kindness and empathy. Their life behind closed doors can lead them to any number or decisions characteristic of uncharacteristic of themselves. In a world where you can choose to be anything, the decision is simple. Choose to be kind. Maybe you will make someone’s day this weekend with an act of kindness. I know people have done the same for me many times before ❤️ Listen. Be empathetic. Go out of you way. ⭐️Putting too much pressure on yourself at Christmas⭐️ This year has been very tough (probably the worst year of my life) and I feel like recently I have been too much pressure on myself to make this Christmas perfect. Last year Christmas was a really bad time for me, I was in a very bad place mentally, wasn’t eating much and was just overall VERY sad. This year things aren’t that much better unfortunately but I am in a better place than I was last year and am able to go out and do things that I wouldn’t of been able to do last year. I feel like because last year was so awful I’m trying my absolute hardest to make this year perfect. I feel like I have to be constantly happy and enjoying myself and making the most of Christmas before it’s all over. I keep second guessing myself thinking that I haven’t done enough fun things this year and that I haven’t made the most of Christmas when I’m reality I’ve done a lot of fun things, I’ve been to various different Christmas markets, Winter wonderland and loads of other Christmassy events. This time is really hard for people struggling with eating disorders because you want to make the most of Christmas and spend the time with family eating yummy foods with Christmas films snuggled up on the sofa but sometimes it is just so hard and so exhausting! As you know I have been struggling a lot these past few months and I feel like I’m putting so much pressure on myself to make sure I don’t “ruin” Christmas again like last year. But instead I should just try to enjoy each day as it comes, make the most of the special family time together and just live in the moment instead of worrying about the future and not having the most enjoyable time I could. You don’t need to be happy everyday it’s ok to be sad and have a “bad day” just give yourself time and space. Because of my recent lapse things with food are extremely hard and challenging at the moment but I will not let that ruin Christmas! There was a point in my life when I thought I was better off dead. No more disappointments. No more expectations to meet. No more pain. The pressure was real, sometimes self-induced. Suicide ideations were commonplace. Then I attempted. But I failed. Why? I reflected and accepted that I needed professional help. So I searched and tested out therapists for over a year until I finally found someone I felt safe with, someone I didn’t have to explain myself to, someone who understood me. Thank you to my ancestors, all the deities in the world and the universe for not letting me die by suicide. Thank you to my family and my best friends for loving and supporting me when I was at my darkest place. Thank you to Rylee’s father for stopping me from ending my life. And thank you to Rylee, my beautiful little human for giving me another reason to live. You all showed me that I had too much to lose and that my life was only beginning. Not everyone has a strong support system. Mental illness is real. Let’s end the stigma. Let’s listen with compassion and empathy. Let’s learn the signs of depression. Our clients hold a place in our hearts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I once had a client say “Oh you won’t remember me.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It stopped me in my tracks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I still remember the name of my first eating disorder client ten years ago. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I received an email recently from someone I treated in 2011. She was giving me an update on her life and stated in the email “I don’t know if you remember me.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I could picture not only her, but her posture in the chair opposite me, and how her voice changed from when we first started talking about her trauma to when she felt empowered and freed from that experience. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The point is: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Your therapist thinks about you in between sessions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Your therapist roots for you between sessions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Your therapist thinks about you and roots for you long after you stop coming to therapy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am so lucky to have met and worked with folks I have worked with. Remember, the holidays are hard on everyone. Not just you. You’re not alone.⠀ ⠀ Over the past week I’ve reached out to a few people who I could see were struggling. Why? Because I’m struggling too. I was feeling isolated and overwhelmed and I could see from people social media’s, their personality changes, and their behaviours that they’re in the same boat.⠀ ⠀ The holidays are extremely stressful for many reasons! You’re wrapping up a the year, maybe you’re visiting your family or maybe it’s a reminder that you might be distant from your family (or maybe you decided to move on the 31st after being away for 10 days). Whatever you’re going through YOU’RE NOT ALONE.⠀ ⠀ There’s a lot of pressure during the holidays to appear happy and carefree but it’s a freakin stressful time! ⠀ ⠀ People might act out in certain ways because they’re struggling, it may cause them to be rude or inconsiderate. When someone acts like that I challenge you to take a step back and think to yourself “what are they going through right now that could be causing them to act this way”. Likely it has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. I didn’t grow up with consistency. Mom was unpredictable, and much of my energy went into reading the environment around me. My life was devoid of safety. 🌲 In order to protect myself, I had to constantly be on guard. To be able to drop everything and adapt when things got bad. This kept me safe as a child, but became a challenge in adulthood. 🌲 I lacked basic life skills, and couldn’t focus. I struggled with routine. I had physically escaped that dysfunction. Yet I was still in that headspace of a survivor. 🌲 This year, My focus was development of basic skills. I wanted to create habits and routines to organize and simplify my life. 🌲 At first it sucked. I became discouraged, feeling the disadvantages of my childhood deeply. 🌲 But I fought through and things changed. Suddenly I couldn’t bring my laundry upstairs without folding it. I couldn’t leave the dishes in the sink. 🌲 There is room for improvement. But these simple habits have helped me realize that change is possible. It has shown me that I am strong enough to break away from the bullshit. 🌲 We change things by keeping the promises we make to ourselves. Design for Recovery gets two thumbs up! Read a recent testimonial from a resident's mother: . June 1st, 2017 was my lowest point of despair as a parent of a drug addict - for a moment I lost hope, I was telling myself that I am powerless and have to accept that my son will never lead a normal life, that overdose, death or jail are just inevitable. After a horrific relapse and a month in a rehab I was on a crossroad to choose for him between few reputable sober livings and one that is going to open on July 1st. I decided to take a risk and to trust the psychologist from the rehab who highly recommended David from Design for Recovery. I was very skeptical but after few conversations with David for the very first time I had the feeling that recovery is not 'one size fit all' and sent my son there. He was the first client at Design for recovery when it opened on July 1, 2017. In few months we saw the positive changes. Derek, the manager, had an amazing influence and power over our son! There was another relapse after he started living on his own but the biggest change was that he wanted to go back to the sober living and he spoke about the guys like they are his saviors. He knew that there are there for him and they will protect him. Once again Derek took things in his hands and soon our son was back to his normal self. During all these ordeals Derek and David were there for us. Even now, when my son is independent again, I know that we can always call and share our thoughts or ask for advice. Our relationship did not end. The change in our son is so drastic! Design for Recovery gave us back our hope. As the days are getting shorter, so is this kind of mental darkness luring in for many people, including me. The winter time is a beautiful time but it can also be mentally challenging due to the lack of sunlight and vitamin D. It’s super important to recognize this and take action, do activities that light you up and just take care of yourself. I love taking a long comforting shower, cuddling up in fresh sheets and reading a good educational book, drawing and doing crafts or simply binging Netflix. Sometimes a tub of Häagen-Dazs ice cream is essential, and other times a healthy fruit bowl or a hot chocolate. Anyhoo, you know yourself and your body best. Treat yourself especially kind this time of year as the Holiday time can be especially challenging and socially draining.

Reposting @sasha_tozzi:⠀ ...⠀ "People-pleasers are not necessarily “nice” people. ⠀ They are full of doubt, fear, insecurity, and feel like the only way to get love & feel safe is to do what people want them to do & make sure no one gets upset with them.⠀ “If you like me, then I’m okay” is the subconscious mantra.⠀ ⠀ I know because this was my MO for years. It was a survival trait and the only role i knew. It’s at the heart of codependent behavior.⠀ ⠀ When i first made the connection between people-pleasing and manipulation, a lightbulb went off. I realized i wasn’t actually as ‘nice’ as i thought. Rude awakening! I was doing a lot of things for the wrong reasons- trying to validate my own worth as a person by controlling my image and how i was perceived, making sure no ones mad and everyone is pleased by me. It’s manipulative, controlling, and not loving. Not to mention exhausting.⠀ ⠀ If this is you, it’s okay. It really is. It’s simply a learned trait, which also means it can be UNlearned.⠀ ⠀ I’ve done a lot of subconscious & conscious rewiring around this. One of my mantras now is: “it’s okay for people to be disappointed w/ me. That’s THEIR feeling. It is safe to be me.”⠀ .⠀ Expect pushback when you shift out of pleasing everyone because you are disrupting the system and how it’s ‘always been.’ Take pushback as a sign you’re on the right track, to getting closer to who you truly are.⠀ ⠀ And trust that the only person who needs to be okay with you, is you. Your worth is not dependent on whether everyone is pleased by you, likes you, approves of you. And when you believe this to be true, when you can accept yourself unconditionally, you can easily let go of trying to control your image through pleasing & adopt more of that ‘idgaf’ attitude. There’s a whole lot of freedom waiting for you on the other side." To those who call out hate and intolerance out in the open, despite being vulnerable themselves. To queens that use their privilege to educate about race and gender-based biases, urging the public to end discrimination.⁠ ⁠ To those that are out there in the streets in protest, armed with their moral obligation to themselves, and to the country whom they will serve as its future. To survivors that speak out at the risk of trauma, telling everyone that it is okay to set boundaries and to love themselves.⁠ ⁠ We all want peace. Day 13~ 30 days of Gratitude I often take time off from my work every once a week and go to watch the sunset! Happiness doesn't mean that you don't cry. It doesn't mean you don't have hard days. It doesn't mean that things are easier for you. Happiness is not effortless. It takes energy, generosity, and discipline to be unfailingly lighthearted, yet everyone takes the happy person for granted. No one is careful of his or her feelings or tries to keep their spirits high. Because they are so self-sufficient and their happiness seems so unforced, that person usually gets no credit or support. Happiness is an effort. A wonderful life skill that we should enjoy cultivating and fine tuning. But don't assume that because someone rarely frowns that they don't deserve gentleness and compassion too.

I still struggle with loneliness and feeling sad around the holidays. I don’t particularly have a good reason. Mostly I think it comes from the fact that I have a very small family and growing up my mom would express sadness and frustration that we “didn’t have enough people around.” From what I understand this was a message she learned from her mom as well, who loveddd to entertain and very much believed ones worth was tied to how great of a hostess and party thrower you were. My mom has not really gone to therapy but I’ve gathered this from asking her questions about her childhood and what my dad remembers. This is part of the work of therapy- you get to learn empathy for others which allows you to release resentment and soften towards loved ones (if you’re interested). Anyway I’m sharing this list because sometimes we have this feeling of sadness and we don’t know why and we drive ourselves crazy trying to figure it out. Figuring out why doesn’t always help and can definitely be a trap to stay stuck but it can also create awareness. Now that I know this loneliness over the holidays I feel is not necessarily mine it allows me to release it and let it pass me by rather than clinging to it and trying to banish it.
