Want to smoke your quads and glutes and lungs all with one movement? Add lunges to your workouts. - Lunges challenge the glutes in a different way than traditional squats, since they are more single leg focused. True both feet are on the ground but there should be roughly an 80/20 split between the front leg and back. The glutes have to work extra hard to help with stabilization as well as their primary job of creating movement. - Here I am demonstrating walking lunges but there are many different varieties including forward, reverse, split squats, and side lunges. If you ever have problems with your knees it’s probably best to focus on reverse lunges and stationary split squats. - Most people hate lunges. But lunges are one of the most effective and safest ways to train your legs. Slowly build up your ability to do more reps and more weight. It’ll be worth it. Probably.

Sprinting is an awesome form of exercise. There are few things that feel better than flying down the track or up a hill (or wherever you like to sprint). All other sounds are drowned out by the wind rushing by your ears and the sound of your feet. - But as we get older and busier we tend to start choosing slower forms of running, or even stop all together. And moving fast should really be a capacity we hold on to for as long as possible. - Sprinting in itself has a lot to offer: increased cardiovascular health, increased strength in the glutes and hamstrings, increased muscular coordination, decreased body fat, and increasing general “in shape-ness”. - The main drawback is an increased risk of injury, especially for people just returning to sprinting. Typically a result of weak hamstrings and glutes, the risk of hamstring strain is high unless a smart progression is used. - Hill sprints are probably the safest form of sprinting for several reasons. 1) You can’t go as fast since you’re fighting gravity more than usual. 2) Stride length is shorter which reduces hamstring lengthening. 3) There is less impact on the joints. - Combine hills with a great warm up protocol and you should be well on your way to getting faster, leaner, healthier and more fit.

Front squats are a classic squat variation that have been revered for their ability to reveal weaknesses and build serious strength. The front squat might be one of the best exercises for testing overall strength and athleticism since it requires tremendous core stability and leg strength. - A traditional front squat requires placing the barbell on the front of the shoulders, touching the front of the neck. This placement keeps the center of gravity really close to the midline which allows the athlete to keep a very upright posture. - The wrinkle with using a sandbag is that the weight can’t quite be so close to the midline, resting on the front of the shoulders and even some of the upper arm. Because of this the tendency is to drop the arms down, almost allowing the upper back to round a bit. The cue to “keep the elbows high” is regularly used with the barbell version, but is even more important here. At the bottom of the squat you should drive the elbows towards the sky to initiate the movement back up. This should be the first cue you go to if you find you start to fall forward. - Another bonus of the front squat is they usually allow you to squat deeper than back squats since there is less forward lean. Take advantage of this to get a better stretch on the quads and glutes.

Squats are a fantastic exercise to train just about all the muscles of the legs, and especially the quads and glutes. They can also be great for increasing strength and stability in the low back and abs. - When setting up to do squats start from the ground up. Plant your feet and feel solidly balanced on them. The stance width and rotation of the feet are very individual so play around with those things to find what feels best to you. Next brace the abs hard, as though you were doing a plank. Keep your shoulder blades back and down and your neck in line with your spine. - Squat down as far as you can with out letting your butt tuck under. While a little tuck may be fine for some people, stopping just short of that point will be the safest way to squat for most. To finish the squat, push through the whole foot and come back to a full standing position.

Complexes are a series of exercises performed back to back without ever putting the implement down. Complexes are commonly used by Olympic lifters during times they aren’t specifically focusing on the competition lifts but here we can use sandbags to create a really good conditioning effect. Since complexes hit just about all the major muscle groups they can provide a challenging workout. - Transition from one exercise to the next will ideally flow in a way that makes sense. In this video I move from a bent over row, to an RDL, to a clean, to a front squat, and finally to an overhead press. Notice that clean is kind of a transition exercise, moving the bag from held near the legs to the front rack position for the front squats and finally to the starting point for the overhead press. - One limitation of complexes is that you will be limited in how much weight you can use by whatever lift is your weakest. But that’s fine since when used properly maximum strength is not the objective. Trying not to throw up your last meal is…

Cleans are a staple in sand bag training. - In traditional gym workouts there is a certain group of exercises thats just known as “the basics”. Squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, pull/chin ups, and rows. These are the exercises where most of the training effort should be since they are most likely to give the greatest benefit. - Well, for outdoor sand bag training I would include the sand bag clean as one of the basics. It’s much easier to learn than the barbell version and it’s pretty easy to teach. It offers a lot by helping build explosive strength of the hamstrings and hips, a great conditioning effect, and even teaches how to absorb force effectively. However there are a few things that often need to be “cleaned” up. (Ugh…) - First, make sure you start with a good hip hinge. Keep the back straight, hinge at the hips, keep the knees soft. The clean requires a good explosion to get the weight moving, but don’t start that explosion when the bag is too low. Accelerate on the way up and when the hands pass the knees, thats when you explode. - Second, make sure you catch the bag well. Don’t try and pull only with the arms and end up catching the bag way too low. Nor do you want to let the bag go too high and then fall back down on you. You want to catch it right around chest height. You also want to catch in close. Don’t let the bag get away from you. Keep it tight to the body. Think of punching your hands around the bag as fast as you can. This helps solve all of the above issues. - Cleans should also be the way you get the sand bag into position for any exercise requiring you to hold it at chest level or on your back. It’s the safest and easiest way to get it into position.

MYTHBUSTERS . Myth #4: Lifting Weights Makes Women Bulky . We know you’ve heard this one ladies. “Lifting weights, especially heavy ones will make you big and bulky.  Instead, you should focus on keeping your calories low, doing mostly cardio and then mix in some high rep exercises with light weights.” . 👉I can promise you this ladies.  If you follow that advice, and your goal is a lean, athletic, toned physique, you’re going to be very disappointed. . Chronically under eating, avoiding weights and doing excessive cardio is actually the perfect recipe for a loose, weak looking physique. . Back to the myth specifically… Muscles grow as a result of 2 main factors. Stress and recovery. . 📌Stress = workouts . 📌Recovery = sleep/food . Here’s the thing.  Your genetics, the amount that you train, the amount of and what you eat and the number of years that you do it for are the variables that control what your physique ultimately becomes. Notice that I said “the number” of years that you do it for. . If lifting weights made people (male or female) bulky by some sort of “default”, there would be a lot more “jacked” people in the gym, but that is not the case.  Putting on muscle size takes loads of hard work and it takes a long time.  There’s no danger that you’re going to do it quickly or do it by accident. . 👉The recipe for the lean, athletic look that some ladies are interested in is achieved by lifting weights through a well designed program that increases in difficulty over time and by maintaining moderately low (~20%) body fat levels.  The weigh lifting provides the stress that makes the muscles present, and the body fat level makes the muscle visible. . Can you get big muscles from lifting weights? Absolutely! But only if that is your genetically pre-disposed to that and you work extremely hard both in the gym and on nutrition for a very long time to achieve that goal. . So don’t believe the myth ladies.  There’s no reason to fear those dumbbells and barbells.  They actually hold the key to your success. . What other myths do you hear about lifting weights?

This weekend I filmed over 100 new exercise videos. - Only 3 reps of each exercise. (Except for this Complex in the video here) - According to my watch my “active energy” was 1500 calories during this time. And it wasn’t hours and hours. It was a little less than 1.5 hours of actual demonstration and letting my heart rate recover. - I guess these sand bag things burn calories pretty well. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Must be doing something right. Abs are coming in and legs are popping before I even get started this morning. Going to be a great workout! I look forward to squats all the time. So excited to be switching gears for awhile! The fun part about it all is after you get to really know your stuff through experience you get into all the scientific aspects of it all and start playing around with it. It’s amazing what your body does and how it adapts to different diets and workouts. You can literally change your body composition in just a matter of a few months if you wanted to. Everyday is like Christmas with all your body parts! If you limit yourself to one way of thinking in this part of life your missing out. It doesn’t have to be a boring chore to workout and you don’t have to be an athlete who competes to look like one. ⁣ : Here are a couple of videos, the first one is a warmup set and the other is at 90% of my 1rm.⁣ ⁣ Notice that both movements have exactly the same depth and neutral spine. ⁣ ⁣ Yes the 90% load is obviously slower but apart from that, the movement patterns are identical.⁣ ⁣ When going heavy, most people change the depth of the squat or their knees and chest cave in. ⁣ ⁣ When building up to a heavy load, ensure that technique and depth stay the same. ⁣ ⁣ Loading up the bar and doing a quarter squat will never get you strong in the bottom position. ⁣ ⁣ If that means going higher in the rep scheme and lower the weight then so be it. ⁣ ⁣ Record yourself, chase that ‘perfect’ rep and put your pride to the side. Focus primarily on great form first, before loading the bar.

Keep the goal, the goal. - When working towards your objective I think it’s better to keep laser like focus on tasks that will actually take you towards accomplishing your goal. - Don’t let distractions disrupt your focus. - Don’t let speed bumps become full on derailments. - And most importantly, don’t let self sabotage creep in. - Fat loss really isn’t complicated. Eat in a calorie deficit, get enough protein, move around a bunch, and do resistance training. That’s all it really is. But all that stuff isn’t easy. - That’s why you need to have a strong enough motivator pushing you. Your “why”. - If your “why” is strong enough you can figure out a way to get stuff done. And it really doesn’t matter what your “why” is, it just has to work for you. - So try this: 1. Figure out your “why”. Dig around a bit and make yourself uncomfortable. A good “why” isn’t going to come from a place of comfort. - 2. Set your goal. 10lbs of fat loss? 20lbs? Run a 5k? Build some muscle and strength? Doesn’t matter what it is, just make sure it’s something that gets you going. - 3. Set an action plan, and DON’T procrastinate. Write down the 3 biggest hurdles keeping you from reaching your goal. Then make sure you work towards them everyday. - If you’re not sure how to get started on one of these steps talk to someone that can help make them clear for you. Just make sure it’s someone you would trust to guide you.

I’m all about finding what you love and doing that. ⁣ ⁣ But lifting weights is awesome. Like, seriously. I don’t know that I would ever be able to cut it out completely. ⁣ ⁣ So if you’re even a little interested, GO FOR IT. ⁣ ⁣ Swipe to see my journey with weights over the last few years. ⁣ ⁣ Spring of 2016- I had NO IDEA what I was doing. I just followed some people on Instagram, pinned some workouts on Pinterest, and got in the weights section and did it. Did I feel out of place at first? Yep. And at first it was kind of weird to just move a weight a certain way so many times and then be done. But then I started to push myself little by little. ⁣ ⁣ And I fell in love. ⁣ ⁣ Another great thing about weights is that beginners put muscle on fast. See May of 2016. You can see in the pictures that I was pretty excited about some of the definition I was getting. ⁣ ⁣ May of 2018 was the end of a “bulking” season where I ate a surplus intentionally and lifted a LOT to try to put on muscle. ⁣ ⁣ Currently, there’s a nice balance of weights and cardio. Worked my legs and glutes pretty much to death today. I decided to try a pyramid set on my back squats and, you know, just murder my legs right from the get go. So for these sets start light on weight and then work up to a heavier weight then decrease back down, but make sure it's weights that allow you to finish all your sets. I also had my heels elevated on plates because I'm a tall girl with long legs, and that makes back squats more challenging for me, and the plates help that a little bit. Only your nutrition! - Week 2: Add in a solid sleep schedule. Wake up and go to bed at the same each day. - Week 3: Make the gym a habit. Just go everyday. Even if you just walk on the treadmill. It is about the habit! - Week 4: Set a workout structure! I choose trap bar deadlift instead of conventional because there is enough hamstring work done through squats and good mornings. When performed correctly it is a great compound movement to incorporate into your workouts. 💪🏼 ———————————————— Why? 🤔 Many people think the act of lifting heavy weights will cause inevitable injury and problems when you’re older 🧓🏻👵🏻but that’s far from the truth if the movement is executed with textbook form. 📖 If anything it can strengthen the lower back and save you from possible injuries in the future. Although sometimes we have adrenaline and our form breaks down and have an increase chance of injury, 🥵 it does not mean it was the movement that caused the injury necessarily but rather the failure on our part to execute it with perfect form. Tonight me and my boy Roudy turned up at the bar. Since it's international chest day, we figured we'd switch it up and hit legs.
