Downbeat Strength and Fight Club have always been my favorite MM100 workouts but my God they really tested me tonight. I have crazy muscular legs. My lower body is built like a defensive lineman. I can rack/bar squat at least 100 lbs (and I myself am just over 200 lbs). Tonight, I didn't pick up anything over 12 lbs. I was sweating buckets and that's not an overstatement. And the moves! I never thought of some of these moves and combos. Skier swings, single leg squats, reverse lunges with twists, side lunges with chops... Add in some balance and agility work from Fight Club and I was wobbling in the cooldown. I'm just toast after this. I need to remember to keep my head and neck neutral. I only remember like half the time 😬 2x5 conventional and was 1x2 with 3 count pause 2 inches off ground at 225/102.3kg. Barbell Overhead Press, a staple for any shoulder day, but take a step back and see that there’s more to it than you think. 👈🏼 • A few important factors: - A stable base i.e. your core & legs properly supporting you throughout the movement. Squeezing your glutes & bracing your core will help tremendously. - Your wrists are in line with your elbow when getting ready to press. Friday night deadlifts and racks pulls! When we hit plateau in training, sometimes we need to address weaknesses outside of the gym. When we work with athletes who experience plateaus in their lifts, we first address the proper adjustments in their training. At that point, if progression still isn’t moving along as it should, we look at nutrition. A massing cycle could be the answer. Many times this plateau will happen when a client is cutting weight, and we have to have the difficult conversation: "At this point, what is more important to you - breaking through this plateau, or finishing the cut that we have planned?" It is up to them to make this decision, but ultimately we cannot expect to eat in a caloric deficit and get stronger. There are exceptions, but at some point, you’ll likely hit a wall. She may even be eating enough and maintaining weight, but everything is "stuck.” This is also an appropriate time to consider doing a massing cycle, if strength truly is your number one goal. You might put on a little bit of body fat, but eventually, you can enter a cut if you want to bring it back down - this isn't a forever phase. Upping calories is not only going to help build some muscle to encourage a breakthrough in your plateau, but you’re going to have more energy to do so. 🥳First time in WRAPS! That was too cool. So much to work on but I can’t believe how easy 285 felt. I think I did it 3 times. Then I did 2x5 at 205 lbs. Last set was paused squats at 205. Besides four sets of conventional deadlifts after one of my bench days, my last three videos are what my lower body training looks like at the moment. @lalalightsout hitting a smooth Snatch with 65 kg (143 lb), or just 66% of her 1RM a few months back ⠀ ⠀ Lauren and I were chatting earlier today about percentages, and she brought up the point that she struggles with programming templates at times because of how much more demanding it is on her. ⠀ ⠀ Training sessions become more taxing as an athlete becomes more experienced. When I was a newer lifter and my best Clean & Jerk was 120 kg, I could work up to 90% on any given day and come back the next day fresh and ready to go. Now that my best Clean & Jerk is 190 kg, I need to be more deliberate on what I do leading up to working to a 90% weight, and prepare to have some time to recover in the day or so afterwards.⠀ ⠀ Let’s make another example: In a training session, a workout that calls for an athlete to perform Power Clean triples at 75% is going to require different levels of exertion based on the strength of an athlete. An athlete whose max is 100 kg would perform the triples at 75 kg, whereas an athlete whose max is 160 kg would perform them at 120 kg. Even though the percentages are the same, the stronger athlete would ultimately be lifting a heavier load and perhaps lifting closer to their true max (versus the other athlete who may be still becoming familiar with the technique of the movement). ⠀ ⠀ This is something to keep in mind for athletes following templates, particularly for the more advanced athletes following a program written for beginner to intermediate athletes.
