Woot! 馃毃NSV馃毃 Three years ago, I sat across from my doctor who told me that with a 147/90 BP I was in Hypertension Stage II, and if I didn鈥檛 get my weight & fitness under control, she would have to put me on 馃拪 to control it. Up to this moment, with few medical issues outside of pregnancy, I had convinced myself for DECADES that I was the healthiest fluffy person ever. But here I was - tipping the scales at 295 pounds, blood pressure in the Danger! Danger! Zone 馃Ж. The fat lady had sung and she was me. It was time to face the music, and change the score. Ok - enough with the cheesy musical metaphors... Yesterday, that same doctor recorded my lowest blood pressure reading since my 20s. 120/60. I had to have it repeated back to me. 馃帀 YES!!! 馃帀 Not all victories 馃弳are recorded on the scale. This one came straight from & for the 鈾ワ笍. HOW TO AVOID BURNOUT So many people start off super motivated, only to be burnt out shortly after There must be a balance between discipline, patience and having the correct strategy鈥 Think about it What鈥檚 more realistic, sticking to a plan that limits you of the foods you enjoy, with super low calories, tons of cardio mixed with an exercise plan that doesn鈥檛 suit your goals Or A plan that encourages you to eat all types of foods and that is tailored to your goals. A cardio plan that builds up as you do and a training plan that is only 3-5 days depending on your schedule and goals. I think we all know In today鈥檚 society we want it now, not tomorrow! But, fitness鈥. hell.. life doesn鈥檛 work that way . Does it have to take years? Nope, you can see pretty amazing results within 12 weeks if you follow the right program . But, people fail and get burnt out because they are impatient and don鈥檛 take the time to learn and focus on long term sustainbility for both Training and Diet. I always tell my clients to focus on the long term and learn to enjoy the journey. That way you will avoid burn out . It鈥檚 still not common knowledge that you can indeed eat the foods you enjoy and get/stay in shape. Just, the other day I posted a picture of Pizza and Fries on my instagram and people were freaking out like OMG! How can you eat this!? . It鈥檚 simple, I know the science of how it all works and I鈥檝e done it long enough that I understand my balance and I don鈥檛 obsess over it . Now, is the majority of what I eat healthy. Yes! But, I allow room for foods that I enjoy. If I had to give up ice cream and only eat chicken + broccoli all day to stay in shape. Forget it! I鈥檓 out.. where's my Haagen dasz! Look, over the decade of being a Coach I鈥檝e experimented with pretty much every diet that鈥檚 out there. And, I鈥檓 telling you guys . Left pic:2012. Sure, I was a lot skinnier than I am now, but I wasn鈥檛 healthy. You see, I knew that if I kept myself in DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) for an extended period of time that I would lose weight.& I did. . Lost 110 lbs in 14 months. I was literally killing myself doing it, but I didn鈥檛 care. I looked good, and everyone always told me so. Who doesn鈥檛 love the attention... right? . I ended up going into a coma, and was hospitalized five separate occasions due to having been in DKA. But that still wasn鈥檛 what changed me. . It was seeing my dad cry. I made my dad cry. And for those of you who know my dad... he doesn鈥檛 do that. It was this point that I realized I need to get my shit together. Not just for me... but for others who love me as well. . . . Fast forward to the picture on the right: 2019. I gained the weight back (as my doctor said would happen). But this time, I鈥檝e made a commitment to myself to be the healthiest version I can be鈥攂oth physically, mentally, and emotionally. . I have an amazing husband, the best baby boy in the entire world, a little girl on the way, and SO much to live for. . . So here鈥檚 your daily reminder that this health and fitness journey is NOT all physical. Actually... it鈥檚 hardly physical at all. It鈥檚 a mental and emotional journey... and once you鈥檙e healthy in those two categories, it鈥檒l start to show on the outside. So, let鈥檚 work on this together!

Yes momma, you can't give your energy away to your child if you don't fill up your cup first. 鈦 馃馃馃馃馃馃馃馃馃馃馃馃 鈦 鈦 鈦 We all have those people we we have to take care of. But, momma you cant take care of your child if you dont take care of yourself. This includes everything in your life. You have to take care of yourself first. Do what you want. If you have goals and things you want to do, you need to put them first. Get that workout in, make yourself food, get yourself a manicure/pedicure/massage, hire a trainer, join a gym. Put yourself first. Put your mask on before putting on someone else, because if you cant breath then how can you help someone else. 鈦 鈦 鈦 Dont volunteer for your child's school when you want to train for a race. Dont be your kid's soccer coach when you want to join an adult league. Do those things you want first so then you can do what others want. Be selfish. It's okay momma. You deserve it.

This is a question I get perhaps daily. Switching out old ways for new and sticking with it is a challenge, but this is what worked for me. - Start with ONE thing - one thing you can commit to changing consistently. Once that becomes the new normal, pick another thing. Keep adding, and you new way of living will emerge. - When it comes to exercise, pick ONE thing that you enjoy. If it clicks, it will stick. I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed strength training. And once I started to watch my body composition change, it made it easier to keep doing it. And when I started to understand the connection between increased muscle mass and metabolism, I was hooked. - Go slowly - that鈥檚 why I emphasize the concept of ONE. Often when we鈥檙e desperate to change, we make a huge list of all the things we are going to do. 鈥淓xercise 6 days a week.鈥 Well, if you aren鈥檛 exercising once a week, you鈥檙e setting up an unreasonable expectation. Chances are you aren鈥檛 going to be able to sustain that. Which leads me to... - Be realistic. Ingrained habits, like deep gouges in wood, are going to need gentle, consistent sanding. For me, for example, I was obese for decades. I needed to accept that it was going to take time for change in every way - mind body soul - for this to become a lifestyle. - Celebrate progress in all its forms. I still get caught up in the scale - I won鈥檛 lie. But I try to make the majority of my celebrations be about changes I notice in my clothes, in a new muscle that pops out, a activity I can do, or something I wasn鈥檛 able to do when I was 95 pounds heavier (like cross my legs or hang up a new shower curtain without stopping after every other ring). Yes - showy achievements are AWESOME but it鈥檚 the little things that make life big. - Whatever your goal - wellness of personal life - I do think this approach works. Me to me in the morning: I got thissss! I鈥檓 so good at what I do, I鈥檓 not even worried I could do this with my eyes closed *reads emails and realizes I messed up* - Lately I鈥檝e been hearing in my community/experiencing myself that when things don鈥檛 go as planned or they get hectic, we kind of lose grip of our mental. We get down on ourselves, we briefly doubt ourselves and our capabilities, we warily move forward- worried of messing up again. Do me a favor, STOP!!! Stop that. You鈥檙e better than that! All you did was miss a catch. That doesn鈥檛 mean you lost the game. When you鈥檙e putting your best into everything that you do, you needn鈥檛 worry about much else. Mistakes happen, slip ups happen, and sometimes even if you did everything right, it just wasn鈥檛 meant to be so. Come to terms that whatever that task, goal, or obstacle was, maybe this one wasn鈥檛 meant to be your best work but it will inspire your best work to come. Remember that 馃挕 - The 鈥淟鈥檚鈥 are still just as much a part of the journey as the 鈥淲鈥檚鈥 are!! Been doing quite a lot of thinking about this whole fat shaming debate the last few days since Bill Maher used his talk show to suggest that the world needed Fat Shaming to make a comeback..鈦 鈦 To be honest, from someone who was picked on and bullied for a large portion of my younger years, it's something very close to home.. 鈦 鈦 And, I'll say from the offset, there's a little bit of irony in this argument, because my fitness journey, this fitness journey, that I'm plodding through began with a joke made by a work colleague about my weight and how he felt I'd be the best person to ask about where to eat... 鈦 Given my very obvious love for food, due to my large physical appearance... 鈦 Apparently 馃し鈥嶁檪锔忊仯 鈦 Anyways, I suppose it's not going to be a surprise where I stand on this..鈦 鈦 I get it.鈦 Overeating is your own fault, it's your decision to eat what you do, to excercise or not.. 鈦 鈦 But few overweight people are going to respond positively to what is effectively bullying by going and changing their lives..鈦 鈦 And bullying never fixed shit! 鈦 鈦 For me, over many years, I was the butt of jokes, and all that did was drive me into further lows of worry, anxiety and caused my self esteem to crash.. 鈦 The constant reminders from other people that I was fat and overweight only led me to become more self judgemental, at times self loathing and made me question so many things about myself in a poor light that would never have crossed my mind had it not been for the constant tirade of fat jokes..鈦 鈦 It also, like I've said before, it also pushed me to seek comfort in the thing that ironically was lending to the problem - food.鈦 Highly calorific, highly palatable food.鈦 鈦 Pizzas, Ben and Jerry's, share packs of sweets that I never shared..鈦 鈦 The quintessential "I need ice cream to feel better after this...." moment, rather than maybe facing the issue..鈦 鈦 One day that changed.鈦 My mindset changed and my ability to take someones digs, someones bullying and use it as lighter fluid in my fire changed.鈦 鈦 When up to that moment peoples opinions, their jokes and digs, their comments only acted like a fire blanket to suffocate my small flickering flame... 鈦 鈦 猬囷笍 continued 猬囷笍

18th September. Most dates have no other meaning apart from what we ascribe to them. For me, 18th Sept 2016 is the date I decided it's time to make a change and I joined my local gym. Fast forward 3 years later, and a lot has happened in that time, good and bad. But things definitely changed. I've qualified as a Fitness Instructor, Indoor Cycling Instructor and a Personal Trainer. I am able to lift heavier than I ever thought I could, I can run further than I ever could and can run faster than I've been able to since I was about 15. I can do things now that felt impossible back then. When I started back training I couldn't squat properly, do burpees, run further than 200m without feeling like I needed an oxygen tank, and I couldn't lift more than 5kg above my head and even that felt really heavy. Now I can do all of these and more. I run a regular bootcamp, and have coached clients online and in person, helped others lose weight, get stronger, feel empowered and learn to live healthier lives. I'm still on a journey myself. I still carry fat and loose skin round my tummy, but much less than 3 years ago. I still struggle with my relationship with food, especially using food for comfort and binging when anxious or depressed. But I'm fitter and healthier. Exercise helps me deal better with stress, it's helped me make friends, and feel more confident about myself when I otherwise would beat myself up. Being fit and healthy is about much more than a number on the scales, or aesthetics, it's about loving your body, and looking after it enough to allow you to experience everything you want in life. I'm glad I made the decision 3 years ago to start exercising. It was tough at the start, I felt out of place, but I stuck with it, and 3 years later, exercising is one of my favourite things. Think about all the times you have delayed starting a goal because it involves change or discomfort. Getting up earlier to train 馃弸馃徎鈥嶁檧锔, signing up to a new gym, pushing yourself in your training, setting aside time every Sunday to meal prep for your week ahead 馃, having to research new recipes that better support your health goals, changing into your gym clothes and going to the gym after work rather than relaxing on the couch with a glass of wine after a long day. 馃嵎. . It is uncomfortable because it is not your 鈥榥orm鈥. You have a routine, you are comfortable. When you hear people talking about getting outside your comfort zone, this doesn鈥檛 always look like doing something crazy. It can be even the smallest adjustments to your normal. Your daily habits are things you have been doing for years and you do them almost on autopilot. We resist changing this by telling ourselves stories like, 鈥淚 don鈥檛 have time鈥, Im too tired after work, I don鈥檛 like gyms, I don鈥檛 know how.鈥 Really this translates to 鈥渄oing these things is uncomfortable.鈥 If you want things to change, you need to change something you are doing daily. I thought, it's only ONE POUND, who would ever need such a light weight?...and then a few years later, I knew why. . . It was for those of us who had to start from scratch. For those of us who had lost most muscle tone after being stuck in bed for 4.5 months straight because of chemotherapy. It was for those of us with an invisible illness who are trying their hardest to workout/lift weights/gain muscle/etc because our doctors said it could help our condition or alleviate our symptoms. . . I have had to "start over" many times. After cancer, after each of my high-risk pregnancies when I couldn't workout, after POTS flare ups...and of course it gets me feeling down every time, but each time I also realize how strong our bodies truly are. . . If you are afraid to start working out or going to a new gym because you're worried about looking silly with the tiny little "baby weights", just remember how many times I've had to start over with these little one pounders. Same goes the length of your workout. If your workout is only 5 mins long the first time back in the game, you are AWESOME. I'm on your team, and I'm rooting for you. People often tell me they don't have time to eat healthy, but this meal literally took 15 minutes from prep to the table! It's not about having tons of extra time, it's about being willing to simplify and work on the fly. I had cabbage and zucchini in the fridge. I had chicken already cooked. I had frozen cauliflower rice and frozen peas that I mixed and steamed in the microwave. While that was steaming, I chopped the cabbage and zucchini and put it on the stove. After my caul rice /peas were done, I reheated the chicken, and when that was done, I dumped the grilled veggies on the plate and added salt. That's. It. Calorie Cutting Tactics 馃摑 . Muuuuuch simpler than most think and make out! . The toast example in the video is one! . Another is switching your toast from a seeded farmhouse loaf which is about 125kcal per slice to a best of both loaf which about 95kcal per slice. . That鈥檚 30kcal per slice... for me 90kcal per day! . If you鈥檙e prone to a snack 2-3x per day... if it鈥檚 a 200kcal snack, is there a 100kcal option? Potentially 200kcal saved! . If you fry your eggs in the morning with 2tsp of oil (about 80kcal) could you not use fry light which is 1kcal per spray (you may need 10 馃槅) but that鈥檚 another 70kcal saved. . I pray for the s m a l l things. Like y鈥檃ll I literally prayed that my baby girl would 鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅 鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅 have my eyes. my nose. my lips. Lito鈥檚 hair. (Don鈥檛 mind mines 馃う馃徑鈥嶁檧锔) Lito鈥檚 eyelashes. Both our personalities (still looking out for that) And love the Lord (working on that too #trainupachild) 鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅 And I mean look at her 馃槏, although her shirt isn鈥檛 completely accurate 馃槄 at 6 months she is looking more like herself and what God created HER to be. (if that makes any sense at all) 鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅 During this 100 day challenge I also threw out some INTENTIONAL prayers for my faith + fitness journey. Goals that I was seeking from my Father. 鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅 Deeper relationship with Him. Growth in knowledge of the Word. Focused prayers. Decreased body fat percentage (checking on day 101) No mama pooch. Decreased bloating. Toned Arms A B S. 鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅鉅 and thank you Lord! At 6 months postpartum and 50 days into our challenge because of the Lord keeping me consistent and these fit groups I have reached MOST my goals! MISS A WORKOUT by: @chaddriscoll - I am not all too sure where this myth generated, but it needs to come to a halt today. If you have ever heard this or believed it please tag a friend and help them! - Missing a workout is simply a part of life. Shit happens! But what happens to our bodies when we miss? - LITERALLY NOTHING AT ALL. - It is commonly believed that all progress we have made is gone, your metabolism instantly slows, and your body gains lbs of fat. - The reality is you haven鈥檛 lost all of your gains, your body is still burning calories, and you鈥檙e not a failure. - Heck you may have just gave your body some much needed rest, which could lead to even more progress. - How much is too much missing? I think it is a good rule of thumb to not miss 3 workouts in a row or attempt to train 3x/week. - You will start to notice some loss in muscular strength and endurance after about 2 weeks of detraining, but that doesn鈥檛 mean fat gain is in play too. That will all depend on your overall calorie balance. - So next time you miss sit back and relax. You are human. Not a failure! - Stay strong! There are FIVE phases of fitness psychology 鈥 aka the five layers that you get to journey through on your way to SEEING yourself as FIT & healthy. 鉅 鉅 1锔忊儯 THE DECISION: this can take 2-3 seconds OR it can drag on FOREVER. It鈥檚 the moment YOU decide, your body is WORTH your sweat. It鈥檚 mixed with emotions of excitement & doubt (can I do this?) but eventually, the decision is ONLY made if your BELIEF in the 鈥測es I can鈥 outweighs your doubt in the 鈥淚鈥檓 not sure if it鈥檚 possible ...for me...鈥 THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP 鈥 why? Because transformation ONLY starts AFTER the transaction. 鉅 鉅 2锔忊儯 THE VALLEY OF DOUBT: this is where most folks 鈥渇all off the wagon,鈥 and where New Years resolutions come to die. It happens AS we鈥檙e building new habits, then normal life gets in the way and instead of starting again, we INTERNALIZE it. 馃敟LUNCHBOX PREP馃敟 - - ________________ Parents, this one's for you. Although you might not realize it, your child's future nutritional habits are largely dependant on the way you raise them from a young age. Neglecting your child's health with the attitude " Oh s/he's just a kid, let him/her eat what he wants" is not the right approach to have and can negatively impact them in the future. A lunchbox filled with artificially flavored snacks with tons of unhealthy ingredients and very little nutritional value can not only take a toll on their health, but teaches them that eating healthy is not of priority. Instead, try to pack their lunchbox so that at least 90% of the food is healthy and packed with whole foods that contain complex carbs, protein, healthy fats, fibrous foods, and less sugar. The rest can be stuff they like, such as a ritz pack. It's also important to note that taking it a step further to educate your child about the importance of healthy eating is also very crucial. 馃敟SUSTAINABILITY馃敟 - - ________________ I don't believe in cheat-days. I believe in long term sustainability and finding a diet that's right for you. If you feel the need to cheat on your diet, that means it is too restrictive. I'm a huge advocate for flexible dieting, which allows for small "cheat" meals throughout the day. Except they're not called cheat meals, they're simply a part of your diet. This is referred to as the 80/20 principle. 80% of your food should be healthy whole foods, and the other 20% can be less healthy food that you love & enjoy. There are TONS of diets out there. Keto, paleo, weight-watchers, atkins, you name it. Rebecca might love reducing her carb intake and so keto may be for her. Josh loves skipping breakfast so maybe intermittent fasting will work for him. I'm not going to bash any of these diets, as there will always be people that may find that some diets work better for them than others. There is no one size fits all diet. Hence what you need to figure out is which diet works best for YOU. Once you end up identifying which diet is most enjoyable & sustainable for you, a cheat day won't be necessary. Don't fall for fad diets just because Linda from planet fitness said keto helped her lose 10lbs in 5 days. That was water weight, Linda. And you have a carb-induced binge episode every 4 days. Me to me in the morning: I got thissss! I鈥檓 so good at what I do, I鈥檓 not even worried I could do this with my eyes closed *reads emails and realizes I messed up* - Lately I鈥檝e been hearing in my community/experiencing myself that when things don鈥檛 go as planned or they get hectic, we kind of lose grip of our mental. We get down on ourselves, we briefly doubt ourselves and our capabilities, we warily move forward- worried of messing up again. Do me a favor, STOP!!! Stop that. You鈥檙e better than that! All you did was miss a catch. That doesn鈥檛 mean you lost the game. When you鈥檙e putting your best into everything that you do, you needn鈥檛 worry about much else. Mistakes happen, slip ups happen, and sometimes even if you did everything right, it just wasn鈥檛 meant to be so. Come to terms that whatever that task, goal, or obstacle was, maybe this one wasn鈥檛 meant to be your best work but it will inspire your best work to come. Remember that 馃挕 - The 鈥淟鈥檚鈥 are still just as much a part of the journey as the 鈥淲鈥檚鈥 are!! Things all happen for a reason, and I know that. 鈦 鈦 This year has been such a roller coaster for me. I鈥檝e had some great races, and some not so great races. 鈦 鈦 I met some of my goals, but didn鈥檛 even come close to the other ones. 鈦 鈦 All in all, I am so grateful that I am able to do this sport. 鈦 鈦 BUT!
