Do you use a wide grip or narrow grip? . As long as you are pulling and getting stronger, you are doing it right.  It doesn’t really matter if you are doing lat pulldowns with a wide grip or narrow grip. . What matters more is your wrist position (pronated or supinated). A pronated wrist (palms out) position, regardless of the width, is optimal for maximally activating the lats. . A supinated grip (palms facing you chin up style) will put more emphasis on the biceps and less on the lats. Who doesn’t love building bigger bis? . The point is, don’t sweat the small stuff. While programming has its own place in training, using cues is a means of ensuring quality execution of whatever is in the programme. A cue can improve performance the moment the lifter gets a hang of using it correctly (provided that the specific lifter needs the specific cue). ● Cues are specific instructions used by lifters (given either by a coach/ partner or by the lifter himself/herself) before/during the execution of a movement in order to get a desired effect in their setup and/or execution. "Unwind the elbows" is the cue we will use as an example here. It is a cue I personally use for myself to simultaneously flare the elbows and push the bar up and back towards the rack, to eliminate the moment arm between the bar and the anterior deltoids as early in the lift as possible. Compare Slide 3 (where I just finished the eccentric) with Slide 4 (where I just started by concentric), and notice the elbow position. ● Cues may or may not be literally interpreted. For cues of the second type, the physical response of the lifter to the cue is a goal in itself, even though the cue itself isn't literal. Eg: "bend the bar" is a very common bench press cue which can't be taken literally. ● In general, the goal is to use the minimum number of cues required to get a lifter to lift with efficient form. "Unwind the elbows" is a single cue that eliminates both "flare the elbows" and "push towards the rack". ● A cue that works for one lifter, may not work for another. "Unwind the elbows" won't work for somebody who doesn't habitually tuck his elbows during the eccentric to begin with. ● Cues need to be understood. If a lifter doesn't perceive "unwinding" as flaring the elbows and pushing back towards the rack, he is unlikely to benefit from the cue. ■Need help building strength and getting a better body composition? Every day is an opportunity to work on yourself, your wellbeing and your own gifts & talents. • Stop waiting to feel motivated or inspired to get started! You don’t need to be any more hyped up or pumped up, what you need is to put your head down and work! • Looking after yourself, building your business and developing yourself is not a chore or a luxury, it’s a way of life. Start taking a more mature approach to your overall performance by making it a way of life, a way you carry yourself and the way in which you operate. • That way, you won’t need to get hyped up and motivated every 3 minutes, just to do the things you should already be doing! You’ll be more in control and calmly going about your business and getting big things done. Without the noise, without the drama and without the hype. • That’s where I need you to be; Focused, consistent and deliberate. • You know the drill, let’s get back to work!
