Hey everybody! Dr. Greg here again 👋🏻 . After years of suffering with near debilitating low back pain and sciatica, John decided he had nothing to lose by coming in to see what The Wellness Way could offer. . As a hard working farmer he has no choice but to complete the task on hand every day at work. He couldn't imagine how he was going to be able to continue to grind it out every day unless something somehow changed with his back pain. . He had seen another chiropractor for years with no relief and had exhausted all of his medical options. He didn't want to live off of pain medications and the potential of spinal surgery that guaranteed no relief. . After his initial exam and x-rays he was presented with a different approach to chiropractic care. After a few ups and downs during the first few weeks of adjustments, his body began to turn the corner. He was able to perform better at work and wasn't suffering with the debilitating pain any more. . John now continues getting adjusted on a weekly basis because he doesn't want to go back to the way things used to be. The most important thing is to incorporate chiropractic as a part of your preventative wellness plan. If you’re experiencing pain, get an assessment to ensure your spine is aligned and to see if other issues are present. Those with severe pain may require a level of treatment that has them seeing a chiropractor multiple times weekly. Others may visit a chiropractor monthly or quarterly as a routine check-up.

Meet MaryAnn 👋🏻 A local high school swim star, she came to us after suffering from debilitating mid back pain. If implemented correctly, it produces anti-inflammatory compounds (eg endorphins), improves circulation and produces chemicals that enhance brain function.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ Here are 7 tips to optimize your exercise routine with an autoimmune disease:⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ 1. Find an exercise that is fun and enjoyable. Positivity is anti-inflammatory while dread and negativity are pro-inflammatory. Making it fun will be part of the health benefits. A group class or social setting may be healthy for the same reason.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ 2. Challenge yourself enough to get your heart rate up.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ 3. Don’t challenge yourself so much you trigger a flare. The key is to be able to do it again the next day. A consistent exercise schedule will deliver the most health benefits.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ 4. Pay attention to your body. If you are feeling so run down you can hardly get out of bed, that is probably not a good day to go work out. If you are feeling a little run down but can function, dial back the intensity of your exercise but see if you can still perform. Sometimes a light workout helps you recover faster than not working out.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ 5. If you are feeling really run down while working out, it may be better to quit early than to push through.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ 6. Capitalize on the days you feel good to challenge yourself a little more than normal, being cautious not to overdo it.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ 7. Remember, this is a lifelong condition that requires lifelong attention. I know how it can be frustrating and feel like you're getting no results from workout your tooshie off in the gym or at home. It doesn't feel good, when you feel you have put in the work, and you aren't seeing any change. Then, comes the binge eating because "the heck with it, it's not making any difference." For me, it has been more the first part, about putting in the work and not getting results that I want. For a lot of the ladies I chat with, it feels like the working out and eating better, isn't worth it because we're not getting results. I get it! What I wish I would have known sooner is what I want to tell you! I didn't need to workout more, but I need to keep up resistance training & with overall movement. I didn't need to NOT take in anything after a workout to “keep burning calories and to not ruin my workout by eating” but DID NEED to fuel my body with a fast digesting protein + a high glycemic carbohydrate supplement for the best help I could give my body. It does not come down to punishment, it does not come down to giving up because there is something wrong with you or me. It comes down to focus on the things the SEEM confusing, like nutritional timing for our body and balance! THIS is what we focus on in Team Schmidt Fit. We build strong families. Last Saturday I volunteered for an Ironman. I had thoughts of fear and doubt before the event. But after giving my first massage I was so ready for the next☺️It was an amazing experience massaging and connecting with athletes from all over the world. “Stay grounded” is the phrase I hear most in school. To me being grounded means to be present in the moment with my client, increase my focus, and create an emotional/energetic boundary between me and my client. •Grounding can be as simple as closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths before and after your massage session. This is what I like to do☺️

Wellness tip Wednesday✨👩🏽‍⚕️⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Let’s chat about OVER EATING! 💭☝🏼⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ We’ve all been there at some point! When we know we’re full but for some reason we keep over consuming anyways 😨... this can cause digestive upset, bloating, weight gain etc.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ Here are a few common reasons WHY we tend to do this, AND how to AVOID IT!🚫:⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ •You aren’t getting enough SLEEP 😴 👉🏼 When we lack sleep, our body produces more of the hunger hormone GHRELIN. So make sleep a PRIORITY, improve your sleep hygiene 🛌.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ •You’re stressed/emotional and this is your main coping mechanism 😔👉🏼Try MEDITATION, ACUPUNCTURE, CHIROPRACTIC or EXERCISE to deal with your stress, instead of suppressing it with food.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ •You eat when you’re BORED 👉🏼 Pay attention to snacking patterns, go for a WALK, do CHORES, keep your BRAIN 🧠 DISTRACTED with books/work📚, call a friend!⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ •You eat too QUICKLY 👉🏼 Chew your food 10+ TIMES before swallowing, place your utensils down on your plate between bites🍽. This also aids in DIGESTION.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ •You aren’t eating enough healthy FATS and PROTEIN 🥥🍳👉🏼 If simple carbohydrates make up the bulk of your diet then you’ll likely be more hungry throughout the day. Fats and protein are satiating and will cause you to snack less.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ •You’re main hang out location in the house is the KITCHEN 👉🏼 Change your environment! When having food so close by all the time this temps us to over consume when we’re not even hungry🍪.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ •You mistake HUNGER for being THIRSTY💧👉🏼 When you’re DEHYDRATED, your body receives mixed signals on hunger— causing you to believe you need to eat when you really need LIQUID. 🤔 Been told how you sleep is wrong or why your back/neck/other aches and pains happen? Well, tell that person they’re wrong __ 📌 Culturally we view some sleeping postures like laying on our stomach or having the head turned to the side as “wrong.” However, this doesn’t hold up __ 1️⃣ We don’t have research linking sleeping positions and pain 2️⃣ Even if we fall asleep in a certain position - research shows we typically change positions a -lot- throughout the night. 3️⃣ The research we have elsewhere (like sitting posture) didn’t find a relationship between maintenance of that position & pain. So, why then would a lower load position like laying down do so? __ 🤔 When, if ever, does sleeping position matter for musculoskeletal pain? __ 1️⃣ If we wake at night due to pain or it interferes /w sleep quality/quantity. Here we likely have an irritated tissue getting more stress placed on it with how you are sleeping - but think of it like a bruise that is being poked on. The position didn’t cause the bruise - but changing out of it and to a different one helps us stop poking the bruise & let it calm down. __ 2️⃣ If we slept on an unfamiliar surface, in an unfamiliar position or didn’t move much (like when sleeping heavily intoxicated.) Here we just placed stress/load on areas of the body that are unaccustomed to it - so we wake /w a crick or ache in the neck/back. But it’s the unfamiliarity to the position/stress that’s the issue, not the position itself __ 3️⃣ By far the most important factor though is the position allows you to sleep more or better. This applies even if you don’t have pain laying or at night bc although we don’t have studies linking sleeping position & pain we do have quite a bit linking sleep quantity/quality and pain __ ❗️Takeaway: __ 1️⃣ If you’re in pain but don’t have problems sleeping at night then just pick the most comfortable spot for you (even if it’s a “bad” one) & focus on improving your sleep quality and quantity. 2️⃣ If you do have pain interfering /w your ability to sleep at night, then you may benefit from modifying. Included above is some I commonly make with patients. Hope it helps 👍

Do you encourage your clients to have a no-shoes rule in their house? ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ We track in more than just dirt and dog poop in on our shoes; we also track in pesticides, heavy metals, particulate matter, and other chemicals.⠀⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ These chemicals buildup in the dust inside our homes, which we then encounter when we walk around, touch things, etc. ⁠⠀ ⠀⁠⠀ Encourage your clients to take their shoes off when they come inside, or at the very least, switch to inside-only shoes! ⁠⠀ ⠀⁠⠀ Bonus: this helps keep your house cleaner too! 🧹🧹🧹⠀⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Are you a no-shoe household??⁠⠀ ⁠⠀
