Are all types of proteins the same? Not even a little bit! . So I've recently had questions about what is different about different types of protein, and thought I'd make things a little more clear! . Whey protein is KING when it comes to building muscle and burning body fat. This is because it has the highest concentration of the essential amino acids (the ones your body cannot produce on its own). We'll just compare the amino acid Leucine content between a few types of protein to save time because it is by far the most important amino acid when it comes to building muscle and burning body fat! . Beef protein isolate sounds like it would be great, but they definitely aren't using prime cuts of steak to get that protein! Most companies will use the throw away/leftover parts of the cow to get that protein like the ears, hooves, etc. . Leucine content in beef protein isolate only makes up 3.3% of the protein. That's pretty low compared to whey protein which has over 3x that much per gram! . Egg white protein is highly bioavailable, and a great choice, but in a supplement I'd go for whey every time unless there is an allergy present. Anyone with a whey protein allergy should use egg protein! . Leucine content in Egg white protein makes up 8.4% of the protein which is plenty better than beef protein isolate, but not as much as whey! . Whey protein is the best by far! Leucine content in whey protein makes up 10.7% of the protein, and it will take less total protein to get enough Leucine to signal muscle protein synthesis, and recover from those workouts! . Vegan powders are out there, and if you're plant based I'd highly recommend you get one of those to get enough protein in as getting enough protein as a vegan can be difficult! . HIGH REPS VS LOW REPS!!!!. • No matter which rep range you choose if we increase the amount of weight you can lift you will increase muscle mass and strength!. • Now the important stuff for high vs low rep range is that higher rep ranges get the volume and metabolic fatigue we need to produce muscle growth in quicker but you miss out on a lot of the strength, power and neurological efficiency we get from lifting lower reps! Eg 3 sets of 10 is 30 reps! (great for pure muscle mass and if your lacking time) But 10 sets of 3 is equal workload but actually more volume because the total weight moved in the sessions is higher (you’ll be lifting a heavier weight only doing 3 reps) This means you’ve built more muscle whilst becoming a strong mother fucker doing low reps!!!!! CRAZY!!!!!. • So yes doing high reps will build a lot of muscle buttttt your just being soft in my opinion! Why’d you’d want to be a big puffy weak as fuck human is nuts to me! I’ve heard a lot of crazy negative statements about ketogenic diets most of which is not based on any actual scientific evidence. One of these proclamations is that you can’t build muscle or gain strength on keto. Here I am almost 40 constantly getting stronger with massive amounts of lean mass. Nuance is always missing from those conversations. You can eat a carbohydrate rich diet and not gain an ounce muscle also. There are so many factors involved. This is the most I’ve ever been able to press. I’m up to 45 lbs up from 35 just 4 weeks ago. ✨Snap from a few weeks ago 👉Present state is a much more bloated self 😒 I haven’t had a super solid two weeks with my diet and training (due to shoulder injury) 😓 Tricky time of year really! I’m snowed under with work and work functions that involve food and alcohol 🍷 🍰 which ...I’m sure many can relate to. Just want to remind everyone that It is important to ENJOY yourself and not beat yourself up about going off your diet a little BUT it’s also important to not go overboard and stay on track as much as you can / get back on track when you can. DIRTY VS. CLEAN BULK The terms dirty bulk and clean bulk have had different interpretations over the past decade or so. When I started lifting, a dirty bulk was understood to mean eating anything and everything possible no matter what in order to gain weight. It was pretty much standard to accumulate a significant amount of fat. A clean bulk meant eating only whole, healthy foods and it was generally understood that you would be gaining weight a bit slower on a clean bulk than on a dirty bulk. - However, those definitions were inappropriate and incorrect. There should be no such thing as a dirty bulk and clean bulk. Instead, your "bulk" should always be “clean” which should just mean slow and controlled. Whether you're eating "dirty" foods or "clean" foods won't dictate how much fat you gain. You can get fat eating too much oatmeal and chicken. Instead, the amount of fat you gain depends on how many calories above your maintenance you're eating. You should aim to gain weight slowly at around 2-3 pounds per month. Most of your foods should be whole, healthy sources but there's nothing wrong with fitting in some non typical foods as well. They involve working every major muscle group and can be a great way to ensure each muscle is being trained 2-3x/week with enough volume to stimulate growth and gains. - It also allows us to get a good weekly volume of about 10-20 sets of 6-12 reps per muscle group, per week without overdoing the intraworkout volume. We get to spread that volume across multiple days which also takes advantage of our protein synthesis processes in our body which reaches baseline levels again after 48 hours. So if we wait too long to restimulate it, we are wasting potential time of growth. - I also personally like it also because it allows me to work on some skills 3x/week rather than the typical 1-2 that other splits would entail you to do. Practicing any move or skill multiple times in a week, given you focus on recovery too and not overdo it, is going to be paramount in motor learning and motor development of an exercise or skill. - Another benefit to full body work is being able to have extra days for cardio and other training such as MMA, football, or other sports.
