Sometimes in motherhood it feels necessary to step away from it all for a moment and reconnect with yourself. But for so many of us, the journey of pregnancy, birth, and parenthood changes so much of our fundamental identity that only when we step away, do we then realize we aren’t even sure who we are anymore. This can be a HUGE, heavy, painful, terrifying realization. How do we reconnect with ourselves, when we don’t even know who we are? For some of us, it can be helpful to revisit that old self. Curiously try her on. See how she fits. Some of us may even envy her; her freedom, her body autonomy, her ability to be selfish. Her job. Her friends. Her beauty. But often, after we remember her, we then notice that she doesn’t fit fully into our new reality. And this can be the most troubling realization of them all. But once we see it, and mourn it, it can be so freeing. It is so beautiful, what you just did. Not only did you grow life. Not only did you transform. But now the world as you know it is forever altered, because a version of yourself now exists that never did before. YOU did that. And even in the moments when you want to run from it all, you know deep in your soul that THIS is the very truest version of you. Mothers are gifts to the world. We firmly believe that here. And through birth, you birthed yourself as a mother. If you miss that person you once knew, revisit her. Remember her, talk about her, even envy her. But recognize she’s not you now, not entirely. Parts of her still exist within you, of course. But she doesn’t have what you have now. Your gifts, your power, your strength, your wisdom. Your soul in motherhood.

I encourage expectant families to view the process of interviewing providers, making decisions about healthcare, and advocating for themselves throughout as boot camp for the years of parenting ahead of them.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Practice asking effective questions to get the clarity in the answers you’re looking for. Asking a provider how often they perform episiotomies might not give you of what you’re looking for. Try asking, “under what situations do you perform an episiotomy?” Or, “when do you use continuous fetal monitoring?” Open-ended questions draw out conversation and nuance where as yes/no or statistics based questions rarely do.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ask questions.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Stretch your comfort level when it comes to questioning people in positions of authority. Grow your ability to SLOW conversations down so that you get your questions addressed even in the face of authority.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is a practice. You will get better at it with practice. Develop your skill at question-asking as you will likely be asking questions and advocating for your child for years to come, or at least until you’ve taught them how to advocate for themselves. Pregnancy gives parents a great opportunity to grow their advocacy skills! This is one of the ways parents mature and grow through the process of pregnancy and childbirth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #transformedbybirth #birthingparents #birthofamother #birthofaparent #birthofafather #childbirth #selfadvocacy #agency #healthcare #birthprofessional #patientadvocacy #healthcareprofessional #obgyn

“There is labor itself—birth as original a masterpiece as death. There is the delicate overlapping flower of another human personality forming before your eyes, and you blessed and frightened to be a part of it. There is the strange double vision, the you and not you of a genetic half replicated in the physical body of another—your eyebrows appear, your mother’s heart line, your father’s crooked little finger. There is the tedious responsibility of domesticity that alternates with a hysterical sense of destined fate—the bigness and the smallness.” . . . . . . . . . . { Excerpt from: "The Blue Jay’s Dance" by Louise Erdrich }

"Do you photograph c-sections?"⠀ .⠀ I can't tell you how often I, and other birth photographers get asked this question.⠀ .⠀ Mostly it comes in the form of, 'I'd love to book but what if I end up needing a c-section...?'⠀ .⠀ Firstly, it absolutely breaks my heart that women head into birth expecting that they might require a c-section, that is how normalised this EMERGENCY PROCEDURE has become.⠀ .⠀ Secondly, if you hire me or any other birth photographer for your birth and you do end up requiring an unexpected c-section of course we always do our absolute best to get access to theatre to document the moment of birth for you and your baby...⠀ .⠀ But what is most important, is what comes after.⠀ .⠀ Sometimes (more regularly than it should) the mother and baby are separated after a c-section birth where the mother goes to recovery and the baby sometimes is sent back to the birth suite with the birth support partner.⠀ .⠀ THIS is why it is so important for you to have your birth documented ESPECIALLY in the case of a c-section.⠀ .⠀ During these moments that you may be separated, there is so much that you miss but when you hire a birth photographer you will always have these moments captured.⠀ .⠀ The moment of birth is just that, one tiny moment in your entire birth journey - the majority of the documenting comes before and after the baby is born....⠀ .⠀ So yes, c-section births deserve documenting too!⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #sydneybirthphotographer ##rockstarbirthmag #birthisbeautiful #birthphotographer #birthbecomesher #maternitycare #empoweredbirthproject #badassmotherbirther #humanrightsinchildbirth #birth #childbirth #birthofamother #newbornbaby #sydneychildbirth #hospitalbirth #birthisbirth #homebirth #sydneyphotographer

We know there are direct physiological connections between the throat and the cervix. This is why staying relaxed in the face/jaw/mouth and breathing/making sounds during your birth can really help you to dilate and open . This morning when clearing out stuff, I found this old research project I did on the facial bones and was looking at the sphenoid bone in the skull. I called the workshop ‘From Cocoon Forth a Butterfly’ because the bone looks so much like the wings of the face . The sphenoid looks SO much like a pelvis! I like to think of the pelvis opening like wings of a butterfly during birth. To know that you can also relax the wings of the face and make sound can really help relax the muscles and your baby to descend. Vowel sounds like ay, ee, I, oo, oh and singing during birth can go a long way to help you release sensation and relax the cervix/birthing muscles . This metaphor also extends to the emergence of new life and the birth of a mother . From Cocoon forth a Butterfly, as Lady from her Door, Emerged- a Summer Afternoon, Repairing Everywhere (Emily Dickinson) 🦋. #experientialanatomy #yogabirth #emilydickinson #hypnobirthing #somatic #somaticexperiencing #birthofamother #newlife #butterfly #sphenoid #sphenoidbone #newborn #humananatomy #bones #butterfly🦋

In two weeks from now my lessons in what it means to be a mother will take on a whole new level, because these 2 creatures will be flying across the Atlantic ocean, without me, (with their father), to visit the other half of their dna roots. They finally will be able to get to know the caribean island their father was born on. And OH, are they happy to go! They are all over the place with excitement. I am also very happy for the wonderful time they are no doubtly going to have, but i also am aware that this is going to be a next step in my own process of becoming a mother. Because the physical distance between them and me has never been bigger then about 20 kilometre since they were born, and i can feel an almost pulling sensation in my body when the distance gets bigger then that. And on top of the novelty of distance i will also not be seeing them for 3 whole weeks! That is another new level in my journey to become a mother. We were never apart for more then a few days since they were born. Since i was at the age my daughter is at now, i knew one thing for certain, and that was that i wanted to become a mother when i grow up. I thought it was pretty simple thing, i would just birth them and then I'd be one! But the day i held them for the 1st time i knew i wasn't a mother yet, not even by a long shot. The fact that these two people had come to earth through my body had only given me the legal title of being a mother, the real side of it was still to begin, and as i understand it now will never be finished, there are always new chapters that i am finding... A big thing for me in the beginning years was the fear i had of not knowing if i was able to keep them alive. During my pregnancies and in the 1st few years after they were born i had these really disturbing reocurring dreams, where i would forget i had children and leave them behind on a bench in the subway, or where i would forget to feed them for days because i had put them in a closet somewhere but i had forgotten which one it was. When i woke up from such dreams i was almost unable to shake the feeling of how inadequate i must be as a mother to have my unconscious deliver such dreams.

Am I tooting my own horn, or is this photo I took of a fresh mom and baby not one of the most beautiful things you’ve seen today?!?! 😍😍😍 . . #TheGoldenHour is such an important moment regardless of how or where you birth your baby. It is in our best interest as members of the birth team to allow the first hour after baby arrives to be a quiet, intimate space for these two to begin their bond. Benefits for baby include relaxation and better breastfeeding outcomes, and benefits for the birth person include a reduction in the risk of postpartum hemorrhage and postpartum depression (just to name a few!). I’m sure I don’t need to say that emergencies do happen in which babies benefit from being taken from the birth person and into immediate outside care, but all attempts should be made to keep this hour uninterrupted if possible. It’s the beginning of such a hard but beautiful journey which is raising and loving another human, more than you’ve ever felt love before ❤️ . . . . #firstmomentsafterbirth #oxytocin #oxytocinrush #oxytocinlove #lovehormone #newborn #newparent #newmom #skintoskin #bondingwithbaby #fallinginlove #iloveyouforever #birthofamother #yegdoula #intheeyesofadoula #edmontondoula #yegbirth #birthdoula #labourdoula #youcandohardthings

. Love is Love. ♥️🏳️‍🌈 . . This past weekend there were lots of beautiful rainbow flags, balloons and colourful bunting scattered across Edinburgh for @prideedinburgh, in celebration of diversity across Scotland. . . It makes me so happy to live in a country where I can teach yoga and be the doula of pregnant women whose partner is either of the same or the opposite sex. To me, that makes no difference whatsoever. . . What makes a difference is the love and dedication with which these couples prepare to welcome their babies into their life as a family. Parental love is parental love, regardless of your sexual orientation. #Repost @we.are.mamakind with @get_repost ・・・ “Who wanted to be a mother, anyway? Mom called to mind a relationship with someone, not an individual. A mom was your servant. A mom picked up the wrong thing at the supermarket. A mom needed to stop and get stamps on the way home from soccer practice and you hated her for it. A mom wore a white, collared shirt and stood at the kitchen island selling cereal in television commercials. Moms clustered on benches in the playground pulling snacks out of their bags. They took up the whole sidewalk with their goddamn strollers. Moms nagged. Moms were stressed out. I knew it was all internalized misogyny and guilt and bad public policy but I still couldn’t really get around it. There was no mother I wanted to be. I wanted to be myself, but better. I wanted to be the type of person who woke up before the baby and went for a run. This was what my mother did with us. To me, this was what a mother was: someone who was one step ahead of everyone, who had her finger on the pulse of the household, who came in with groceries just when you wondered where she was. This was exactly what I wasn’t.” . . . . . . . . . . { Excerpt from: “And Now We Have Everything - On Motherhood Before I Was Ready” by @meaghano // Artwork: “A Conflict of Interests” by Lauren McLaughlin @laurenlifeartandstuff via @spiltmilkgallery }

#Repost @breannamduncan ・・・ Just have to brag on this beautiful soul for a moment...💁‍♀️ In 2017 (a 1.5yrs after opening my private practice), I decided to take an aspiring #IBCLC under my wing. While I had experience on the inpatient side of lactation, I was still relatively brand new at the outpatient lactation world. I definitely wasn’t sure that I was ready to be someone’s mentor!😬 However, I met @heatpackinhipster at a local @keepaustinbreastfeeding meeting and we hit it off immediately. As an introvert, that’s not commonplace for me so I knew she was special and that we could be easy friends! 😂 Not long after that meeting, she asked if I would mentor her on her journey to becoming a Lactation Consultant. I knew in an instant that she would do amazing things the moment I met her, so it was an easy decision. • Bethany is one of the kindest, most genuine, hard working and passionate people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. She worked with me for a year, but it honestly flew by because I had so much fun teaching her. She made my first go at being a mentor a breeze and it was such a pleasure to be able to blossom into the realm of teaching what I love with a person who was so dedicated, bright and excited about her new path. Clients love her! Even better, she’s a wonderful friend that I’m blessed to have in my life. I’m so happy we met when we did. • Congratulations on passing your IBCLC board exams @heatpackinhipster! I knew you had it in the bag. Enjoy adding those 5 lovely letters to the alphabet soup behind your name! Very excited to see what you will do with your career! 🎉 I’m so excited to announce that she’s staying on with me as my first IBCLC hire with The Mama Mantra, too! 🤗 [love this photo of her doing what she loves most, cuddling babies...except this time the baby was mine! ❤️] #themamamantraatx #themamamantra #theboobieninja

“Nothing as important as motherhood can be purely good or bad—it’s far too complex. Society seems to be invested In a “bliss myth,” the idea that joy is the primary emotion of motherhood. But every mother will have moments of ambivalence, because she’s always juggling between giving and taking. Since these conflicting feelings are rarely openly discussed, many women are left feeling that these struggles are their fault. . When women’s stories deviate from this bliss narrative, they may feel alarmed and bury the experience, choosing not to share the uglier moments of motherhood with family and friends, and hardly ever on social media. Their stories are pushed deep down and left untold, and so the cycle continues.” . . . . . . . . . { Excerpts from: “What no one tells you - a guide to your emotions from pregnancy to motherhood” by @alexandrasacksmd and Catherine Birndorf // Image by @denupzter }

"You mean we must phone you even in the middle of the night?" . I have had this question asked so so many times. As a birth photographer I am on-call for your birth 24/7 from 3 - 2 weeks before your due date. . We live & breath around our phones and have a little adrenaline rush the moment it rings. We are there with you every step of the way. Don't stress that you will bother us or deprive us of sleep. We would much rather be in time to capture your little one's birth ♡ . info@rosegarnet.co.za www.rosegarnet.co.za

The tree of life... the beginning of your little one's story ♡ The Placenta ♡ . Many people find it "gross", but to me it is beautiful. I truly try my best at every birth to catch a glimpse. It helped your angel live, eat, breath, survive... for 9 months on the inside. . How absolutely amazing is that? . info@rosegarnet.co.za www.rosegarnet.co.za

Our breath is often the only thing we can control in difficult moments. Noticing the quality of our breath can tell us a lot about what’s going on in our mind and body. When our minds wander off to future worries or things we can’t control we can return to our breath which brings us back into our bodies and the present moment. This is helpful for those moments of overwhelm or anxiety. You can bring your attention to your breath and then to sensations in your body, sounds, objects, smells, and temperature of your environment. So breathe. Be still and open to the wisdom waiting for you in the stillness and presence of your body in the sacred here and now.

“The loss of identity you encounter after childbirth is profound. It’s heavy, confusing and extremely confronting. You spend the better part of your life carefully crafting your character and all it takes is one tiny human for it to crumble at your feet. It’s terrifying. All of a sudden things that meant so much seem insignificant and other things you never cared about become important. It flips you on your face, changing the way you see your surroundings. It’s utterly heart breaking at times because you feel you have no grasp on who you are. I honestly felt betrayed the weeks after Nova was born. I felt like my close friends should have tried to explain and prep me for not knowing who the fuck I was. How could people let me discover this on my own? But now I see that the reason it was not fully explained to me is that it’s almost impossible to describe, even though I’m trying my hardest right now. And while I believe this happens to every unsuspecting new mother, the degree in how hard it hits varies. I swore to myself I would write this post. And if anyone asked I would try my hardest to explain. I write to remember because I hope I never forget.” - @foxymamamay

We all know our bodies morph and change during pregnancy. What’s really jarring though to many- is how they morph and change postpartum. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Different things sag and stretch. Other things ache and cramp. It’s hard to know what’s normal or what can be strengthened with a professionals help. Having a postpartum doula you trust is a great ally to have when navigating those times. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📷: @myfickleflesh ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ••• ••• ••• #doula #childbirtheducation #childbirtheducator #motherhoodunplugged #motherhoodsimplified #postpartumdoula #birthofamother #birthwithoutfear #postpartumanxiety #postpartumlife #firsttimemom #thefourthtrimester

Everything is Spiritual. When we birth our children into this world, we have not only physical healing, but emotional, mental and spiritual healing as well.⠀ ⠀ If we ignore any of these aspects of holistic health, our soul will let us know in the form of mood disorders, physical pain, fatigue, and more.⠀ ⠀ We must allow ourselves to be born into the role of mother. This is our journey of matrescence, the becoming of a mother. It doesn’t happen over night.⠀ ⠀ When we allow this transformation, we step into our whole being, our true essence, which is ever evolving.⠀ ⠀ There is a strange praise in our culture for women who don’t let themselves be changed by motherhood. I experienced this, and by suppressing my true nature and that of who I was becoming, I manifested postpartum depression and anxiety.⠀ ⠀ It wasn’t until I fully embodied ME and that I have this one life to live and love (in this lifetime), that I moved passed the anxieties and started appreciating the ebbs and flows of my own motherhood experience.⠀ ⠀ Want to join me in discovering who you really as as mother? I designed the Postpartum Rebirth program for this very reason. It’s a customized journey through the chakras that brings you into alignment with your highest self. The bonus? Your family comes into alignment too.⠀ ⠀ #postpartumdepression #ppd #perinatalmooddisorders #postpartumdoula #spiritualhealing #mindfulmom #meditation #mindfulness #postnataldepletion #maternalmentalhealth #prenatal #postnatal #maternalhealth #postpartumsupport #motherthemother #birthofamother #motherhoodjourney #newmom #birthtrauma #becoming #matrescence

“There is a brilliant series of photographs by Yaeli Gabriely, an artist who first gave birth in her twenties and who now has three young children. At a glance, the image looks like a regular mother and daughter portrait. Until you look closer, and realize the baby’s small body is morphed, warped, falling away into pixels. It isn’t a sunny series on motherhood, it is stark and cold; pale and fleshy. Gabriely’s photos don’t depict a space that ever existed; by stitching together different parts of a panorama of pictures, what we’re looking at is the photographic space, and in it, a lonely union of bodies. We cannot reach them. It describes everything about the ambivalent experience of early motherhood." . . . . . . . . . . . . { Excerpt from: "The True Meaning of Motherhood" by Charlotte Jansen @omfgnoway for @elephantmagazine // Artwork by Yaeli Gabriely }

You love SNACKS. You love being silly and belly laughs and old records playing loudly. You love when we pick you up and twirl you around till you’re dizzy. You are a w i l d child through and through. All the attention is on you the moment you step into a room and you embrace it. Screaming, laughing, dancing, hugging, kissing, eating... you already know what makes up the best things in life. Your adventurous soul continues to inspire me. Your love for nature fuels mine. You are my little Buddha, teaching me patience, awareness, joy in the small things like a pretty flower or a small rock you bring me. You are the perfect example of what love is : kind, full of laughter, cuddles, soft strokes on the cheek, sharing snacks, sitting in silence contemplating life and the stars together. I love you so much baby girl 🧡😭🌻 . . . . . . . . . #ahnujasper #16months #birthofamother #outdoorchild #wildchild

“Of course raising children is a lot of hard work, but I don’t see why it’s supposed to be so virtuous to do work that you created for yourself out of purely your own self-interest. It’s like someone who digs a big hole in the middle of a busy intersection then starts filling it up again, and proclaims: filling up this hole is the most important thing in the world I could be doing right now.”—Sheila Heti, Motherhood . "Like everything else, motherhood is not binary, and it is not always a choice. Even when it is a choice, it is not as if you fully know what you are choosing. It is not about which is more virtuous, or who puts in more hours. We are all in this together, hurling what we can at life, hoping for the best and for better. I am raising a child, alongside my friends who don’t have children; some of my friends are deciding on sperm donors; others are undergoing IVF; some friends gave birth at twenty and at forty; some friends’ mothers have died and some have already raised their own siblings; one friend is raising another person’s biological baby, her nipples bruised from comfort feeding. They are all mothers. Bob Ross is a mother. RuPaul is definitely a #Mom. Motherhood means embracing and nurturing. Mothers are often depicted—reinforced in a disappointing way in Heti’s book—as sanctimonious, didactic, cis-women who suffer and think they know it all. That image is divisive and it needs to be challenged. What I have learnt in my first year as a mother, in the conventional sense, is that motherhood can take so many forms. . Right, I’m off to fill in that hole I dug earlier." . . . . . . . . . { Excerpts from article: "The True Meaning of Motherhood" by Charlotte Jansen @omfgnoway for @elephantmagazine }

I have stretch marks on my thighs. These came when I was pregnant with our first child and gained 60lbs. Do they stop me from wearing shorts? Nope. Do they make me feel ugly? Nope. Do I think about them all the time? Not even a little. I have scars and bruises on my legs too. They’re moments that happened. Stories to tell. Nobody will likely ask where I got the stretch marks from but they may ask about my scars and bruises. I’m proud of these little silver lines on my legs, I happily grew a human inside of me and the result was these marks. It was how my body responded to pregnancy and I’ll hang on to them and wear them proudly.

“ Postpartum is a word Placed on the innumerable variations and colours how the knowing moves in a woman When the veil is thin to the otherworld When the muscle to hold a mask is sore When sensitivity is so acute it can see it all And bear no more what quietly distresses. Mother’s hero’s journey is one Where underworld and ordinary world meet Where descent and return are one The cycle is a dot of endless depth. Postpartum , after giving birth, A woman is shore to shore Elder and baby And the whole wide unknown Between births All of her Warped and extended. Beyond the beyond of limits Is a space that can inform The living If only it can be given A seat to rest A cup to gather the tears For anyone to be baptised In the untempered sea of wisdom” - Anne Maare Pare’ #postpartum #herosjourney #descend #wisdom #theheartofmotherhood #strongasamother #wombhealing #birthofamother #motherhood #initiation

“While doing some research in the early hours, I kept coming across the phrase “work-life balance“. The happiness of mother and child, it seems, depends only on finding this elusive WLB as quickly as possible and maintaining it forever. How to find it, or what it means, remains a mystery. The more I read it, the more I hated the phrase. WLB is something you can afford, if you have a nanny or can pay for a nursery that doesn’t feel like a petri dish. WLB is something you can achieve if you can afford to work less. If you don’t have a partner, WLB is laughable. Even if you can afford WLB, there is nothing about a recently-born, nor I imagine a toddler or a teenager, that seeks balance. The only balance a small child is interested in finding is with their little legs, as they pull themselves up on precarious bits of furniture. And you are a whirlpool of imbalance. Your hormones are unbalanced. Your body becomes asymmetric. Your love for your child is unbalanced. . On one day my daughter might sleep two hours, on others twenty minutes. I want to finish a sentence I’m writing but my baby wants to gnaw on my nipple. I need to read about erotic photography in the nineteenth century, but baby wants to pull a clump of cables down. In the time it’s taken me to write this, I’ve counted, I’ve been interrupted twenty-two times, pudgy hands tugging at my legs, new teeth nibbling at my knee or me having to jump to prevent some disaster. . It left me wondering how many women there are struggling in silence, one-handedly, while being told they just need to find something so pragmatic as “balance”. The WLB is not just improbable, it’s a dangerous delusion.” . . . . . . . . . . . . { Excerpts from: “The Work-Life Balance Is a Myth” by Charlotte Jansen @omfgnoway for @elephantmagazine // Artwork “Home Birth” by @meganwynnestudio }

“You’re a toothless grandfather. You’re not a baby yet. How long does it take to become one? As long as it takes to become a mother? . Every hour you’re born again. You breathe furiously. Your skin gets blotchier. Your fingers scratch your face, gasping for air. . Asleep, you’re an arabesque in pink—oh, so pink—and gold. You look like an angel in a painting. It’s clear. The masters used babes at sleep as models for their cupids and other heavenly beings. . Asleep, you seem to be living other lives, remembering terror, power. Just now, you laughed out loud. Eerie. Wonderful. . Who are you? How many are you? There is too much to catch hold of. Too many expressions, memories. Yours—and mine too.” . . . . . . . . . { Excerpts from: “With Child - A Diary of Motherhood” by Phyllis Chesler // Image by @shellyfergusonphotography }

What makes me happy? Witnessing another miracle. Another moment of LIFE entering the world. Even though I have photographed over a hundred births, each time is a GIFT, each birth so different and unique. This mama went faster than expected and I made it in perfect timing, and got to capture her newest little man taking his first breaths. Seeing her kiss his tiny little face over and over and snuggling him like he was a long lost soul mate gives me tears! What makes me happy?? THIS. And chocolate cream pie. You know what I need right now? Someone to bring me coffee and a slice of J Alexander’s carrot cake... to my bed! It was a long weekend y’all with 5 sessions, assisting a friend photog at a wedding, and shooting another wedding over Saturday and Sunday and this girl is tired! ”The memory of my children's birth has become a talisman that I hold in my heart as I journey deeper and deeper into motherhood. For these moments come again in every mother’s life—the times when we are asked to walk straight into our pain and fear, and in doing so, open up to a love that is greater than anything we ever could have imagined: all life’s beauty and wonder, as well as all the ways that things can break and go wrong…Again and again, motherhood demands that we break through our limitations, that we split our hearts open to make room for something that may be more than we thought we could bear. In that sense, the labor with which we give birth is simply a rehearsal for something we mothers must do over and over: turn ourselves inside out, and then let go.” -Susan Piver

There was a season where I built my days around building a following on Instagram and Facebook and Pinterest. I curated my feeds and boards to perfection and grew followers by leaps and bounds, and put out content to continue building. . But I was exhausted. My soul was taxed to it’s limit. My relationships suffered. I didn’t know balance. I didn’t have healthy skills for handling stress and the trauma from my past and social media was often a trigger. Anxiety was hindering my day-to-day life. . Anxiety and depression among creatives is incredibly common. We’re surrounded by perfection. We are putting our best foot forward, hiding the messy. . During sessions with my therapist, I was able take an honest look at my past, my present and the future I’m walking into. With that came a brutally honest look at social media. . Instagram and all it’s pretty is not the place to measure our self-worth and value. It’s lovely, but it regularly hides the struggle. . This year has been a treasure trove of growth and exploration for me as I’ve practiced self-care, healthy boundaries and found true authenticity. . If building a social media following is taxing our relationships and only adding to our struggle, it’s time to set some checks and balances. Let’s set healthy boundaries online. Log off. Let go of posting every day. Grab coffee in person with a friend. Take a yoga class. Build a community offline. And what better time to practice authentic community than the Holidays? . You are infinitely more than your feed. 💛

Truth be told, I’ve been holding back from posting on here for more than a few reasons. Baby chaos and time restraints aside, I’ve been feeling some things that I feel like I’m not really meant to talk about in public. Things that I’m meant to keep to myself, because logic and reason reign stronger than my emotions. While I know everyone means well, I’m feeling stifled by the need to hold it in. Queue the comments to just enjoy this time, that this phase doesn’t last forever, it won’t always be this hard, there is no need to rush…reality is that life is different now. Becoming a mother to my beautiful son has brought me more joy in the last 8 weeks than I could have experienced in an eternity of lifetimes without him. But in this process of becoming a mother, I’m mourning the death of my old life. When you become a mother your dreams, goals, everything you’ve worked hard for don’t just disappear all of a sudden. They get put on hold, maybe put on the shelf forever. If they’re still possible, you need to work out how they fit with who you are now. I look back at this video and here, I was only 2 days pregnant. My life had already changed and I didn’t even realise it yet. The song choice seems ironic now. This kind of love, the biggest love, that would control me for the rest of my life, growing inside me. I was reading a recent post by @lifeandlens_photography on a similar sentiment to this one, and thoughts I have been grappling with my whole life. And reading it I cried and cried and cried. Then these words below: . Because the truth is, when a baby is born, a woman dies and a phoenix rises. . She’s a mother, but she’s so much fucking more than that and you doubt, disturb and judge her at your peril. . I am still mourning the death of the woman I was. I’m excited to meet the woman I will become. I am learning to be gentle with the woman I currently am. With love #SpinJoy #babylove #postpartumrecovery

8 weeks old... How did that happen 😭 The postpartum period is such an intense time of healing and transition, realisation that life will never be as it was before. I'm finally feeling like I've got my vitality back. After feeling depleted and so run down, I slowed down again- lots more days of feeding and cuddling in bed. I've also had shiatsu and cranial sacral osteopathy in the last week- the osteopath found and released shock in my body from Neve's beautiful but intensely fast birth, which could explain the lingering depletion. It's felt so good to take care of myself. Postpartum mamas- treat yourself to bodywork if you can, or get someone to give you massages, massage yourself! Rest, nourish yourself. Use herbs. (I've been drinking nettle, motherwort, passionflower and ladies mantle) Try yoni steaming- I'm a convert! As mother's we can't give so intensely to our babies and older children AND heal from birth without slowing down and looking after ourselves. Release expectations of 'bouncing back', of launching back into your 'normal life'. Stay in bed for as long as you can! You are making an investment in your future health. #postpartum #postpartumcare
