⭐️Shoulders⭐️ Years ago, I had a small hunch on my back. Wore a back brace for over one year to help correct my posture. To this day my shoulders remain slanted, collapsing my chest into my ribcage. This is part of my shoulder correction practice. ✨Attention all surfers✨ 🏄🏼‍♀️ It’s not everyday that you can get to the coast and catch some gnarly surf, but that doesn’t mean you should lose your paddle fitness. My friend @epalinos asked me to design a programme to help keep her paddling strong, even when stranded on land, and these exercises are perfect for the mobilisation and activation of the joints and muscles integral to catching those big waves. 1. Shoulder clock, to release tension in the shoulder capsule and hydrate the joint prior to exercise. 2. Shoulder clock with increased ROM. 3. Banded pass overs, to activate the tendons and ligaments in the rotator cuff, improving movement quality and reducing the risk of injury. 4. Prone arm raises, switching on the upper and mid-traps. 5. Scap pull ups, limiting movement to the scapular only, activating the lats. 6. Scap push up variations to potentiate the mid-traps, rhomboids and anterior deltoids: - tabletop position - plank position - cobra position (something Emmi struggled with, hence showing two examples) - crab position All of these exercises are designed to maintain and improve range of motion, prepare the relevant muscles, tendons and joints for exercise, and help to reduce the risk of injury. As many athletes know, surfer or otherwise, the shoulder is an amazing joint, but they have a habit of developing niggles and tightness if we don’t care for them properly. And you don’t need to be in a gym to look after them... Here’s an upper body circuit I completed at the start of the week, each station had 3 exercises. I preformed 1 minute on each exercise, so 3 minutes on each station before moving onto the next. - - - I’m sure I’ve made up names for some of them🧐🤨 - - - Hold out in front - weighted ball hold out in front of your body with two hands On and off step - step board in front of you, hold high plank position transitioning from hands on the step board to then hands on the floor and repeat Plank on elbows rock side to side - pretty self explanatory 🙈 - - - You can alter the time limit and how many times you do the circuit to suit yourself 💪🏼 #fitness #circuit #upperbody #arms #shoulders #chest

•Séance bras du 1/09/2019 Il y a quelques jours je pouvais encore faire les bras correctement depuis il m’est impossible de faire certains mouvements a cause d’une tendinite qui me détruit ,une douleur qui est maintenant constante même au repos , Malgré les quelques jours de repos la douleur est toujours présente… Et comme on ne rigole pas avec la santé, J’ai pris un RDV avec un médecin du sport le 1er octobre ,trop hâte d’y aller , je vais sûrement devoir faire une infiltration du moins je l’espère et reprendre après quelques jours de repos. Qu’est-ce que c’est frustrant de pas pouvoir faire son sport correctement Mais bon c’est pour la bonne cause se soigner avant tout beaucoup plus important. Mieux vaut être arrêté une à deux semaines plusieurs mois je me rassure comme je peux. Weird, sweaty hair? BACK To It... • I’ve not been able to train my upper body for nearing on 2 months now as I’ve been suffering with an impinged shoulder. Sooo today I hopped back on the wagon (bench) and eased myself back in to the good old stuff! • Whilst I’ve been doing (a little) rehabilitation work, today was the first time I actually tried using weights again. Here I have one of my awesome athletes @benlaitheasianguy performing a half kneeling overhead trap bar press using the bottoms-up grip with brief eccentric isometrics. Notice anything familiar?? That’s right, more 90 DEGRE JOINT ANGLES!!!!! Although it’s something I’ve highlighted this week in my new squat article (LINK IN BIO), the 90 DEG principle applies to a majority of foundational movement patterns including squat, press, hinge, pull, lunge, etc. In fact a majority of functional movements occur at approximately 90-deg joint angles when performed properly. Significantly deviating from 90 degrees on these foundational movements not only increases potential risk of injury but it also compromises performance, hypertrophy, & functional strength. Remember, movement transfers.  How we move when we train trickles into other movements including those on and off the field.  If we consistently breach those optimal 90 degree positions, it’s much more likely to occur during competition, practice, & other physical activities.  And no, the whole concept of end range training is actually not applicable (read more in article). As for this particular movement, the half kneeling overhead press is one of my favorite shoulder pressing variations as it promotes increased core activation while also working the stabilizers of the core & hips. It also crushes the shoulders, upper back & triceps as the lifter is forced to use controlled technique and smooth mechanics to maintain balance and control during the lift. The bottoms up grip also requires additional grip and shoulder stability to keep the trap bar from twisting and tilting. *SHOULDER LOADING*: This is a great way to work on dynamic shoulder loading, and it easily fits right into a yoga practice setting! All we need is a yoga blanket and a smooth floor for sliding and we are good to go. . And just FYI - the main shoulder loading we’re talking about here is for the “standing” arm. . In addition to the dynamic work the shoulder gets to do here, these thread the needle variations are also great because they work our shoulder in a “closed chain” manner - which just means that the distal end of the limb is fixed (the hand in this case) while the proximal end moves (the actual shoulder girdle itself). . *Controversial side note*: isn’t it funny that we have no problem teaching closed chain shoulder rotations like this in yoga, but many YTT programs say that we should never teach closed chain *hip* rotations such as Warrior 3 to Half Moon & back? When this is the same type of movement done with the same type of joint (ball-and-socket)? 🤔 (Credit to the amazing @trinaaltman for first pointing this out for me!) . Anyway, to get back to the subject at hand, I’ve shown two variations of this great move here. The tabletop variation involves less load and possibly therefore more range of motion, while the plank variation loads the shoulder more and involves less ROM. . In addition to the shoulder mobilizing/strengthening here, we also get to work on some spinal rotation, and especially in the case of plank pose, some core work as well! . It’s easy to get things wrong—especially when we’re describing the actions of the shoulders in backbends. The simplest and most accurate way to understand what the shoulders are doing in backbends is to break these postures down into 2 categories: Backbends where your arms are GOING OVERHEAD (Gleno-Humeral flexion) and Backbends where your arms are REACHING BEHIND you (Gleno-Humeral extension). Upward Facing Bow, aka, full-wheel exemplifies the first group; Ustrasana or Camel, exemplifies the second.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ When the arms go overhead in postures like URDHVA DHANURASANA, the scapulae are NOT moving toward each other. This is the exact opposite of what the scapulae do. The dominant action of the scapula in Upward Bow is lateral (or upward) rotation. When the scapulae laterally rotate their inner borders move away from each other, especially the bottom tip. Pulling the shoulder blades toward each other when they are laterally rotating may reduce the subacromial space in the socket and produce impingement. This is an oh no no—even if someone tells you that it will open your heart more. You want to open your heart more? Fine, keep your scapulae laterally rotated in Urdhva Dhanurasana and watch a rom com when you’re done practicing.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ On the other hand, the scapulae medially rotate when you’re doing backbends when your arms go behind you—like CAMEL, BRIDGE, and BOW. In these postures, you’re moving your scapulae toward each other and using them like a wedge to produce more motion in the Thoracic spine.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ BOTTOM LINE: The technique that you use for your scapulae in backbends where your arms reach overhead is different than the technique you use when your arms reach behind you.
