Inktober has come and gone and come again, with life happening in the in-between. Literally. I made another tiny human. My oldest has grown in her first year of preschool. Both my girls will start school in a few days. . And us...we are in the thick of parenthood. 3 under 5, it is challenging and beautiful and frustrating and exhausting and hilarious and love. We are constantly balancing and reconstructing ourselves. It's tough. But I've learned to be more kind to myself, on the last day of my 4th trimester. At least that's what I'm reminding myself to do more often. I don't expect tomorrow to be dramatically different. I do expect to figure out life a little bit more. Baby cries. Let’s talk about it. • Those close to me know that baby cries really bother me. Like I feel them in my core. I have to sincerely work/meditate/go to a happy place for me to not want to cry as well. This was true before I had kids (like when I worked in a day care and our lunch room was next to the infant room), and it has not improved with time. I’ve been at this mom gig for over four years now, and I’ll just say I’m continuing to work through it and maybe I’ll get over it as a grandma • All this is a bummer considering I’ve always wanted a bigger family. I know, though, that if I want my own kids, I have to have babies.#genius • So if you’ve ever seen me with a pleasant look on my face while any of my babies are crying, just now that I’m working hard and offer me coffee...or wine. • Otherwise I may be here—outside dealing with the cries. Because I’ve noticed that when my baby seems inconsolable or I’m at a loss, she and I both calm down better outside. At least until the mosquitos find us

ⅈ ꪖꪑ ꫝꪮꪑꫀ ડ᭙ꫀꫀ𝕥 ꫝꪮꪑꫀ🌈🎀 . . For over 10 years we had her named picked out { Alexa Emilie ♡♡ } . . For 8 months I carried her strong. My body took over and did everything possible to birth perfection. Gods guided hand from the start. . . For 35 weeks she grew healthy and strong. Gave birth to her on 9.9.19 @ 3:09am. She is our 3rd child and born on the 9th. SO COOL!! She was in the NICU for 9hours after birth to then graduate nursing like a champ to keep her blood sugar levels up and bilirubin levels down. . . For on the 3rd day after birth we went home. . . For a moment to a lifetime, I can now FINALLY breathe 😭🥰 A deep breath of relief--she's here safe & sound. Trusting God with my whole heart over letting fear take hold, He is faithful. . . "When do you take time just for yourself?" ** This was a thought my husband had after overhearing a conversation between 2 moms. He was with our older daughter at an info session for the Girl Scouts at her elementary school. ** Most of the parents there were debating whether or not they were going to sign up their daughters for Girl Scouts. Many were on the fence because the meeting schedule is irregular (every other Tuesday) and also their kids were already scheduled for so many things. ** My husband heard several of the moms saying to one another, "I'm not sure I can make this work. They have soccer 2 afternoons a week and gymnastics 2 afternoons a week and piano one day a week and dance on the weekends." He heard different variations of this, but the idea was the same everytime, even if the activities were not. ** And his immediate thought was, "Wow. When do you take time just for yourself?" ** I have trained him well. ** It's true, though. We allow ourselves to get so wrapped up in ushering our kids from one activity to another that not only are we over-structuring their schedules and not giving them any down time, but we're also not leaving any time for ourselves. Hands up if you can relate. ** Listen, I want my kids to have a fun childhood. I want them to be able to do all the things. They just don't have to do them all at once. This is healthier for them and for me. ** Last year, we didn't sign our daughter up for anything. It was kindergarten and we'd just moved to a new place. No soccer, no gymnastics, no dance, no swim. Just some playdates with friends and all the birthday parties. ** This year, we decided one thing after school. And in the spring, we might add another. That's it, though. Honestly, I suppose we could do more, but my sanity and hers, too, would suffer. ** This is an act of self-care. Creating boundaries for kids and parents. Let’s talk #mentalhealthawareness for a minute. In the wee hours of the morning I went to the hospital because I have CPTSD, because I have had a migraine For 5 days because when I am triggered I get a blinding migraine. The migraine length is the litmus test of my mental wellness. When I got out of the hospital my migraines would last 3 hrs. Yesterday was #ruokday day in Australia, and I bring this up for 2 reasons. 1 Big organisations post about it. Their once a year contribution so they can pat themselves on the back, and do NOTHING about the problem. What really needs to change is a system that treats us as though mental illness is any less important than the sweet old man in the room next to me who had broken his hip. They were sending him to fix the problem, surgery, they set him up with adaptive hardware for him home to physically help him support himself, AND a woman came to speak to him about having regular in home support for helping with regular household chores until he was healed. My heart was happy that he is being so well supported and I was angry because I was scoffed at me when I told the dr the origins of my migraine, because I couldn’t possibly know my body and it’s inner workings better than some random dr and her degree. I was given 2 bags of saline to rehydrate me and a cocktail or medication in my iv that would manage the pain for the next 2 days, and off you go. No supports sent in, no one to talk about practical ways I can get help for my mental illness. No follow up, just “maybe you shouldn’t drive today. And THIS LEADS ME TO NUMBER 2. I was ignored and pushed aside sent home feeling shittier than when I arrived. And this is exactly how mothers are being failed when they leave the hospital for home with a brand new baby. In Canada we are blessed to have midwives who come to your home to do the first few appointments, and carrying forward for the next 6 weeks, but there are still cracks in this system. Newborn mothers need to be cared for like the sweet old man about to have surgery. Newborn mothers need support when they go home. They need practical in home care. Cont. in comments

“I love being a mom so much! With that also comes worry. The first week postpartum was so rough! You hear about getting no sleep, but on top of the fatigue there’s so much more stress. Milk not coming in on time, baby is starving and crying, his umbilical cord is stinky and falling off early - what do we do? Oh no, he peed on his umbilical cord. It’s not supposed to get wet! Is it infected? And then getting bloodwork for Jaundice and worried because he hasn’t had enough wet diapers. Is he going to get brain damage now? And Googling like crazy because of these things you weren’t prepared for. All these stressors happened in the first week when I was extremely exhausted. Plus I had a traumatic delivery during birth. I don’t accept blood and my Placenta wasn’t coming out so I lost a TON of blood, and had healing stitches too. Having to cope with these things on top of no sleep and trying to heal was something I wasn’t prepared for. During my pregnancy I researched a ton about being pregnant and my developing baby, but wish I had prepared ahead of time for AFTER he was born. Like how many wet diapers they should have in a day, what’s a normal temp for a newborn, how many ounces they need to eat as they grow, how to relieve gas etc. Because researching all these things when you’re holding a crying baby or when you have no downtime is hard! So I wish I learned more about newborn care ahead of time. And then having help from my husband and mother and sister helped so much! That’s important for all Mamas is having support. Having someone to cook meals those first couple weeks, and hold the baby so you can take a nap is so helpful! And I appreciated when people would check in with us to see how we were doing, it meant a lot! So in all, I love being a Mother but nothing prepared me for how challenging it would be. Six weeks old, which means we’re halfway through the #4thtrimester 🤪 I’m starting to get better at the logistical side of taking care of two kids (re: wearing Franklin so my hands are free). Though there are still moments when both are crying at the same time and I’m like 😬😰 Breastfeeding 🤱🏼 is completely different this time around. Hamilton couldn’t nurse at first so I was (unknowingly) starving him and almost lost my milk. With Franklin I have so much milk that, coupled with his digestive issues, I make him 🤮🤦🏼‍♀️ In both cases feeding issues have led to poor sleep 😴 and a zombie-like existence for @trungminhvo and I 🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️ But at 3-4a when I almost hit my breaking point, Franklin will flash me the sweetest gurgley grin and I carry on. From the moment I first held him I could feel a sweetness about his temperament that just makes me melt. And I’m praying 🙏🏻 that in the coming weeks we conquer these digestive issues so that we can see more of what makes him Franklin. We love him so.

• S E V E N • M O N T H S • Grayson is weighing in at 20lbs + 4oz & is 27 1/4 inches tall! Wearing size 4 diapers and 9-12 month clothing. • This month has brought so many firsts. He is saying his first word, “hi”! And he is currently sick for the first time with Slap Cheek/Fifths Disease 😭 but, is taking it like a CHAMP! (I think it’s bothering me more than him) • His favorite food is now bananas! Favorite toy is Sophie the Giraffe. And favorite person... EVERYONE! He doesn’t meet a stranger. Sometimes the simplest tip shared between moms catches hold of you and you look at life from a little bit different perspective. My best friend told me recently as we were swapping #momlife stories: "lower your expectations..." 😂 I've been repeating that phrase ever since. LOL. Too often our expectations don't meet our reality & we're caught between how we wanted it to be and how it really is... The only fix is to have your expectations closer to reality. • 9 months in➡️1 month out • . . Im not going to lie, adjusting to my postpartum body this time around hasn’t been easy. Having babies at 19 and 20 compared to having one at 28 is like night and day. I bounced back in like 2 weeks with Tristan and Collin. I felt like my normal 110 pound self within a matter of days. (LOL) My love handles and squishy tummy disappeared so quickly. I didn’t have that lower tummy pooch. I lost all baby weight before I was even 1 month postpartum. And the pain from the csections subsided within a week. Wellllll that’s definitely NOT the case this time. 🙃 But that’s okay. When I really think about it, and think about how incredible is that we get to grow tiny humans in our belly’s, the weight gain, the squishy body, and all the pain are so worth it. It’s a miracle what our body’s are capable of. I was able to carry a sweet boy to full term and he was born perfect and healthy. 😭🙌🏽That’s all I could ask for. My body is still healing and recovering and I know it will take time to get back to feeling like myself. In the meantime, the extra fluff makes for a comfy place for Crew to lay. ❤️ #4thtrimester #postpartum #postpartumbody

This article is one of many that informs the HUG Your Baby program! • From the article: Readiness for hospital discharge became a global concern after many countries began implementing shorter hospital stays for uncomplicated births. • The purpose of this study was to explore predictors of readiness for hospital discharge. The results showed that *NURSES’ SKILL* in teaching and the *CONTENT* offered impacted parent's feeling of readiness for discharge, even after controlling for parity (1st, 2nd, 3rd baby, etc.) type of delivery, and bottle vs. breast feeding. • The study shows that nurses have a critical role in preparing parents for their role as new caregivers after the birth of a child! 6 months ago my husband and I welcomed our beautiful little boy Harrison into the world. I had a relatively easy pregnancy and was one of the lucky ones. When I felt sick, I could stop myself felling nauseous by eating... so that’s what I did. I’d be sitting at my desk at work snacking on biscuits to try and stop that awful nauseous feeling. So by the time little Harry was all cooked and ready to come out, I found myself weighing 105kg! When I’ve told people I had gotten to 105kg in my pregnancy, they’ve replied “oh you didn’t look that big...” well honey, I was! I wish I could say that this is what has lead to me now being over weight and the reason for wanting to do some sort of challenge to help myself get back on track, but the truth is, it isn’t. I’ve always struggled with my weight. Being one of five kids growing up, I’ve often thought of myself as the chubby one. All of my brothers and sisters are a lot smaller than I am. The smallest I’ve been, was when I got married at 26 and I weighed 68kg. The funny thing is, I still saw myself as overweight then and now my new goal is to get back to that weight. Before I got pregnant with Harrison, I was on one of my many health kicks and was going to the gym 4 to 5 times a week, eating fairly healthy most of the time and was weighing around 74kg. As soon as found out I was pregnant, I did try to keep going to the gym, but I got scared. I was scared that some things I was doing at the gym, might hurt my baby. So at around 20 weeks, I stopped going all together and the weight just packed on. I ended up having an emergency c-section with Harrison, after being induced the night before and being in, “active labour” for nearly 11hrs we welcomed him into the world at 10.49pm on the 6th of March. After his birth I was advised not to go back to the gym until he was 12 weeks, but I could start going for walks at 6 weeks... I finally joined back up at a gym when he was 5 months and have recently started my 7 week challenge. Fingers and toes crossed that I actually stick to this one and keep going until I am feeling good and smashing my goal 🤞🏼🤞🏼 #fitnessgoals #fitnessgoals2019 #blogger #healthy #firsttimemum

Don’t be fooled by my insta-ready look here, what you’re seeing is one of the raaaare times I did my hair + makeup and wore something other than pyjamas and a sleeping bra for an event 🤷🏻‍♀️ #momtruths A little about me - I’m a 26 year-old social worker from Montreal, Canada. I have a 13 week old baby boy named David Eli with my hubby Jon. I did a bachelor in Sociology and a Masters in Social Work at McGill University. During that time I did an internship at the hospital in Maternal Child Health (birthing center, antepartum, postpartum and NICU units). After graduation I worked for Child Protective Services until my mat leave 🤰🏻Before all this serious adulting, I spent all my breaks traveling and checking 26 countries off my list 🌎 While I have much to say about what I’ve experienced so far and hope that my rants will be helpful to some of you, I am also clueless and learning on the go like most (if not all) of us new moms out there. I can use all the support and resources I can get and hope to offer the same to you 💁🏻‍♀️ We’re in this together mamas! 👯‍♀️

Welcome to Being Maman! Being Maman is a place for us mamas and mamas-to-be to be real, to share, to ask, and to find support and resources during a time that is both amazingly beautiful and insanely challenging! • It’s 9:47pm and my baby is finally asleep after an eventful napless day. I should really sleep but instead I decided to finally “launch” Being Maman. As a new mom of a 13 week old baby boy, there are hundreds of thoughts, questions, and feelings running through me at all times (especially when I should be sleeping!). Following other moms and moms-to-be while I was pregnant is what got me through those 9 months and prepared me for what was coming (as much as one can be prepared for such an experience). Pregnancy, childbirth, and the whole world of changes that follow are not always talked about freely and openly. Being Maman is a place for us mamas and mamas-to-be to be real, to share, to ask, and to find support and resources during a time that is both amazingly beautiful and insanely challenging! • 9 months in➡️1 month out • . . Im not going to lie, adjusting to my postpartum body this time around hasn’t been easy. Having babies at 19 and 20 compared to having one at 28 is like night and day. I bounced back in like 2 weeks with Tristan and Collin. I felt like my normal 110 pound self within a matter of days. (LOL) My love handles and squishy tummy disappeared so quickly. I didn’t have that lower tummy pooch. I lost all baby weight before I was even 1 month postpartum. And the pain from the csections subsided within a week. Wellllll that’s definitely NOT the case this time. 🙃 But that’s okay. When I really think about it, and think about how incredible is that we get to grow tiny humans in our belly’s, the weight gain, the squishy body, and all the pain are so worth it. It’s a miracle what our body’s are capable of. I was able to carry a sweet boy to full term and he was born perfect and healthy. 😭🙌🏽That’s all I could ask for. My body is still healing and recovering and I know it will take time to get back to feeling like myself. In the meantime, the extra fluff makes for a comfy place for Crew to lay. ❤️ #4thtrimester #postpartum #postpartumbody

Love this #Repost from @annieridout:⠀ ・・・⠀ “After my first baby, I tried to go for a walk on day 2. It felt like my insides were falling out. I turned back before reaching the end of the road. We had loads of visitors; some stayed put on the sofa as I yawned and willed them to leave so I could go to bed. I got mastitis, recurrently. ⠀ ⠀ After baby 2, breastfeeding was excruciatingly painful. My nipples bled. I stayed at home until we’d learned to feed properly (it’s a two-way thing; you’re learning together). Again, I did too much. I didn’t want my two-year-old daughter to feel bored or sidelined. We went to groups and had days out. I had mastitis, recurrently. This time, I’ve done very little. We’ve mainly seen family. A few friends have popped by, without kids, for short visits. This time, I’m thinking about myself and my baby. Not everyone else. And it may sound selfish but it’s about mental and physical self-preservation. ⠀ ⠀ I’ve written a poem that other new mums might find useful to share with friends and family. Or a little more subtly on social media, in the hope that those family members and friends who sometimes lack empathy might see it and clock. ⠀ ⠀ These early months are such a vulnerable time - giving birth is physically and emotionally huge - but it’s easy to forget that, if the new mum is up and washed and at it.”

PADSICLES! ❄️🥰⁣ ⁣ Does everyone know what these lovely things are? If you don’t, listen up! 💓⁣ ⁣ After you have a baby vaginally, regardless of if you tear or not, your vagina is usually quite sore & even swollen! Ice packs feel AMAZING down there-and padsicles are perfect to make while you’re 9 months pregnant awaiting baby!⁣ ⁣ Here’s how to make ‘em!⁣ ⁣ ✴️ Grab some pads-the bigger and extra absorbent the better!⁣ ⁣ ✴️ Pour some witch hazel all over, soaking the pad about halfway, not enough for it to drip!⁣ ⁣ ✴️ Then pour some aloe! Make sure you use the CLEAR Aloe-not the green stuff (like pictured)-it’s better for your lady parts!⁣ ⁣ ✴️ Wrap them back up in the original package, put them all in a plastic bag and store in the freezer! They should be good to go until you need them!⁣ ⁣ *some women find that keeping them open & freezing flat works better than closing them up-I think it depend on how much you saturate the pads and the brand of pad!⁣ ⁣ Tip, even if you had a c section, you can still use these on your c section scar-make sure you talk to your provider, but they feel amazing there as well! Postpartum update ↘ Almost 1 week out and it will be strange laying down for bed tonight reflecting on where I was that time last week - water breaking unexpectedly and all the sudden it was go time 💨! . I think he’s hit his first growth spurt which means I’m a 🍼 🐄 round the clock! 😅 . Yesterday I got to go for a good walk with all 3 kiddos and that felt like a dream come true to see their little bodies running through sunshine-sprinkled fields 🌾 knowing we are a family! . Each day I feel a little more like myself and reclaiming my morning ☀️ routine has been the biggest part of that! . I haven’t been intentionally exercising, but have done some @obe_fitness stretching routines (which feels wonderful) and I look forward to starting back with yoga 🧘‍♀️ in a few weeks.
